Looking for a 98 barrel I'd kind of like a 30 or 8mm. I am keeping an eye on the auctions and just about anything a search pulls up. I've got several emails out to what I've found I'd like a good bore for shooting and will play with mostly cast. Anyone got one sitting gathering dust I could use one. Stock once I get a barrel.
Thanks

Side note it has been on my mind to buy a blank and go that route I'd just have to practice cutting threads clambering crowning I'm OK with I'd just like to save the time at the lathe.

I put a short chambered Shilen .30/06 barrel on a 98 action, wasn't terribly expensive and shoots cast or jacketed great. On another 98 I found a pre 64 Winchester M-70 .30/06 heavy match barrel in a shop for $20.00. Bought it, cut the M-70 threads off and rethreaded for Mauser, recut the chamber and that one shoots jacketed great, I haven't tried cast in it yet.

I have been kind of turning away from the 30 06 I have been thinking something a little less than an 06 but I do know of a couple of barrels out there in 06. I just keep thinking 8mm.

8mm is a great cartridge and very useful for slinging cast boolits. In addition to its performance, I imagine that your action's feed rails will handle it well as that was probably what it was made for.

There are lots of good 8mm moulds out there to choose from. I think that if I was going to rebarrel one of mine and I could just buy a blank .323" barrel, I'd try to order it in a 1 in 12" twist instead of the usual faster twists for the calibre.

Last year Copes were unloading brandnew military profile 8mm barrels for 30 bucks and I got a few and they are shooters. Just screw on and shoot (well, check headspace with masking tape) Wideners might have some also. The ones I got are as good as I can shoot!

There are some in the Classified section, but they sound like they were removed with a pipe wrench.

8mm does well, I've owned a bunch of them, but all military configuration.

Would you be interested in an 8 mm military take-off barrel? I have several, mostly from Turk M-1938, maybe a couple from C Z-48s.

If it had a good bore I'd take a military take off.

Difficult to describe. But you will never forget it if you happen to buy a barrel that bears the resulting scars. No matter how hard you try, they never really go away.

I've bought an 8mm barrel the bore was described as excellent, the steps have been taken out to give it a tapered look. Nice and clean with just a front blade sight so I bought a Lyman 57 receiver sight. I've got it marked ready to drill and tap. Now I need a stock. Might just buy a Richards micro fit plain walnut, just to keep price down. Should be right at around $200 total in this rifle even with dies and a Lee mold. Not bad if the barrel shoots at all.

Well your project sounds good. I for one and my own opinion is stay far away from Richards M,F. Get a Boyd's stock instead, they come prefinished and you will get it much sooner. The last two stocks I got from RMF took 6 months each. And then I didn't get what I ordered. I had to call several times just to get them moving. They told me they would charge my card when they shipped. Six weeks after charging me no stock both times. And they were very rough literally sanded with a hand disc sander. They both had deep gouges cut into them from the sander that took extra time to fix.

Good luck with the turned down barrel. In my experience it can be a crapshoot whether or not accuracy is effected by that trick. Two I had that done to would put the first out the tube right into the center of the bullseye, then start walking the shots vertically as they heated up. One would sling the five shots into a vertical string about 10" long at 100 yards. The third one (I am indeed a glutton for punishment) actually shot a little better than it did before turning the steps out of it. I gave up on that 20 years ago though, and reach for a fresh barrel when it's time to re-hab a Mauser sporter.

Sarco has barrels in multiple calibers and there was a guy on ebay selling NOS Yugoslavia barrels, the NOS barrels are for the mid length action but if you Chuck it into a lathe and machine off the "doughnut " and bevel the back of the chamber a little you can finish ream it to match your receiver, I did that to my VZ24 and it gets under 1 MOA178741
