since i got my tc encore in 444 marlin, i have been wanting a cartridge that is a truly big bore with some black powder. it will be used for informal target practice and possibly hunt some deer with it(alright, yes i am going to hunt with it). although i have alot yet to learn, i "think" it will be either the 50-90/100/110 or the 577 snider.

the 50-110 will be a tc encore with a 27" MGM barrel with a 1 in 28" twist(around $400). it will be "probably" a peep sight. i am "guessing" that i will go 450-550 gr. boolit. brass will starline.

the 577 snider will be anything i can pick up(thru auctions or the 'net). i've been researching this for a couple of weeks and i "figure" i will need 24gauge brass from magtech and either a .60 caliber round ball or a 430-530gr boolit. exact dia. are needed, but i don't have one!

1. what are the books i need for loading blackpowder using the 50-110 sharps and/or 577 snider?

2. although it could be months before i buy either the 50-110 or the 577 snider, which of them should i choose? i am sort of leaning to the 50-110 because everythings(barrel,brass/reloading dies....) is available. the 577 snider rifle is hard to find under my price($500 or less). the brass should not be a problem or the boolits, but i've only found the lee dies.

3. what alloy/bhn should i use? or do i use straight lead?

thank you and there will be alot more questions!!!

I think a 50/90 would be the best, brass from starline and bullet mould from lyman, 515414 weighs at 450 grains with 20-1 alloy with different wads to use as fillers you could shoot 80 to 110 grains of powder. you probably could go up to 540 grain with a 28 twist but not much heavier. I use RCBS dies in my 50/90 Hiwall

About 2 years ago I built my "Super Snider" 577 on a large frame Martini with 30" long Walther barrel. Loads consist of 620gn cast boolit, 95gns FFG in 24ga Magtec cases. It shoots very well and fills the role of a 'fun rifle!

My preference is the 50/90 Sharps which I use for most of my big game hunting, whichever you decide, you will need sights that take into account the large amount of drop at over 100 yards. My 50/90 has a long range tang mounted peep sight with near 3" of travel.

email xringservices@yahoo.com for excellent cheap Snider cases and bullet moulds. I have always found him to provide the best value.

if i used the tc encore in 50-90 sharps and i wanted to "open sight" it, what would i use?
like this?
Williams FP-TK Peep Sight- Thompson Center Encore, Omega, G2 and Scout (http://www.eabco.net/Williams-FP-TK-Peep-Sight-Thompson-Center-Encore--Scout_p_14763.html)

in the encore, i would say deer hunting will be 150 yards or less, i'll say 200 yards just for giggles. over 200 yards is just something i could try in targets, not deer.

That Williams peep may not have enough travel for what you will want once you get to enjoying lobbing those bullets way out there.

PM me if you are interested in an iron MK3 snider. I have one that I've been contemplating selling.
