Drew a Buck Goat in my favorite area. With 13 on the wall, I've been making it harder. Whitworth MZ in 2012, M96 Sniper 6.5x55 in 2014 and this year I'm taking my CF converted 41 Swiss.

Glued on a Burris 2-7 IER, got dies from Lee and 8mm Lebel cases from Huntington.

Almost any boolit is deadly @50 but this 310 GC semi wadcutter I bought a box of in 1998 is the best. (If anyone recognizes the mold that threw it PLS let me know !!) It is the only one that will hold 3" @100. A slug that big motoring along at around 900 fps is deadly. (Rewatch Lonesome Dove if you doubt it)

17 gr 4227, 2.2 cc of coarse Cuban corn meal, Fed LPP

Have fun. I enjoyed using my Trapdoor 45/70 on Pronghorns.

Greetings Mr. Humble. I have a Swiss Vetterli that was butchered many years ago that I doctored up, converted to center fire and love to shoot. The open sights are getting tough for my eyes. Could you share a picture of the scope mount? Did you make it to tie into the stock rear sight base? I've been thinking of making such a mount that would attach with out modification to the rifle.

BTY: I make my cases out of 348 Winchester and trim them to 42mm so I can use a shorter bullet. I've been using a 240Gr SWC and it seems to work pretty good.

You could copy the dimensions into Mountain Molds drafting page and get a duplicate mold for less than 100 dollars.

I guide for Pronghorns every year by the Rita Blanca Grasslands in NW Texas and would love to see that in action. I applaud your upping the challenge each year. Great shooting and good luck! Best, Thomas.

175576I am using the Lee 310GC mold for now. I just got the rifle and have only made it to a range twice. This is my first group (50yds) with the Lee bullet, sized .427, no gas check, 18grains of 2400. I also shot it with gas checks and there doesn't seem to be any difference in performance. The first trip I used some 250 SWC I had lying around with Blue Dot, they also shot great. I only had a few cases made up, now that I know it is going to work I have around 90 loaded up with some minor variations to see how they do.

The 348 was the case of choice when you could get them. The 8mm Lebel is a better fit and requires less fireforming. Also easy to get.

My base is just a flat bottom Weaver cross lock base. I took out the rear sight (a real chore!) and put the Weaver base on with JB weld just forward of the rear sight dovetail. As with any epoxy, hit it with a propane torch and it will pop right off. I've fired 200+ rounds through it and it never moved.

Finding a good IER scope is the hard part. SK scope mounts in PA (on the net) sells a decent 2-7 that has worked fine on my M-1.

IME a heavier bullet (longer) is more accurate.

Good shooting !

Thanks, it is close but no GC. Also found this one which has the DD band, which I've had good luck in 30, 35 and 40 calibers.

Man I love the Vetterli. I have a 69/71, M78 (and a M81 enroute). I had Mountain Molds make a 315 gn mold for my 69/71 that shoots really well. So far just target punchers, but I plan on using them for hunting eventually. Good luck!

If you're casting for your Swiss, what are you sizing them to?

Mine like .430 BUT you really need to slug the bore as they varied a whole lot.

Mine is also most accurate with heavy bullets.

Speed goat for me opens 9/10, will be "out among them" on the 12th !

2014's with 1898 Swede/Dane sniper rifle.

Well that old gal is a 6.5x55 that was set up for 160 gr RN bullets. The first 5000 were made at Mauser Werke as Sweden did not have the right steel. In WW II the Swedes gave the Danes a bunch to use against the Nazis. The brass condition insert in the buttstock was replaced by a Danish coin. The scope is an old 6X Schmidt and Bender with the typical giant 3 post reticle mounted in the "chin on the comb" sniper scope mount.
I spent a lot of time with the rifle shooting it out to 200 yards where, even with a less than perfect bore, it would hold 5 in 3" (post is 6" wide at 200). Spotted this goat and his harem moving off private ground to BLM land. Set up in a Sage lined ditch and waited. When he was 60' away, shot him in the chest facing me dead center. He sat down and fell over. No tracking needed ! Hope I get as lucky with the 41 !

Hard to beat the 6.5 Swede. I bubbaed two of them when they were cheap. One for step son #2 rebarreled with a shilen and a bishop laminated stock. The original bbl was pretty much shot out. The other for step son #4 with original bbl and Fajen straight grained walnut stock. Both are fine shooters. Then I built myself a "6.5 Twede" with a Adams and Bennett bbl on a Turkish mauser. Lastly I picked up a Spanish 93 that someone put a unissued Swede bbl on. It is a work in progress that I haven't picked up in a while. I guess it could be called a "6.5 Spede".

First day out yesterday in pouring rain. Basically a scouting trip. Found a small group on public land. Buck was one of best seen in years. Belly crawling through sagebrush and gumbo mud dragging an 11 pound rifle for 200 yards is no fun at 75 but I did. Finally got to 75 yards and MISSED ! My first miss on big game in 20 odd years ! Had I been carrying my 25-06, I'd be out in the barn now cutting him up. Happily, it's a long season and the migration is going full bore.
Wish me luck ..... old bones are creaking today !

SUCCESS!!!!!!! After many more fruitless stalks and another miss (he was 50, I thought 75), today it all came together. Saw this boy up on a knoll near an old road cut. Slipped the truck into the cut, climbed up the side (rifle at ready), peaked thru sagebrush and there he was 1/4ing toward me @ 50 yards. Dead on hold (offhand) took him in rt front should and he was down. A good goat for our area with a neat right horn curl. 320 gr Boolit is deadly (not recovered).
