I recently joined a hunt club, so in prep for the fall deer season, I got with a friend, 6.5marinediesel (6.5 in the story) and we went in on a travel camper to set up at the place.

Went last weekend to set it up in the 95° heat. (sure glad the AC in that thing works)

Got it set up leveled and other what nots done that you normally do around the hunt camp. Then decided to check out the 'new' to me place.

I had been given a tour a while back but now I need to learn where everything is.

6.5 and I jumped in the truck took the guns, as it was hog season, (well it is year round....) and it was a just in case type thing.

Went a spell down the trail and stopped to get out to look down the power line. Crested the hill and my 6.5 spots a deer. Well I just scope it out and say 'na just a deer lookin bush' he argues, so I hand him my 'eyes'. "yep, deer bush".

I then say, but there are two hogs over there too!

Then we get excited, put our ears on and start stalking. Well the hog is 400 yds away. We "sneak" up to 200 yds, I get a bead on him and hammer down.

One shot flop. He didn't move a foot out of his tracks.

We take off towards him and 6.5 is amazed at the shot, then I show him I'm using cast. :) Now he's really impressed!

Hog wt around 85lbs best I can guess. He was quartering away. Bullet caught him behind the rib cage, but really close to the left ham, and traversed him exiting on the right front shoulder.

Well that's what a 35 Whelen pushing an NOE version of the RCBS 35-200 at 2500 fps will do.

I like it!

Cleaned, gutted and on ice in a few hours.

Had ground sausage for brk this AM. Good stuff!

Did I mention it was HOT!

I had a red shirt on, the dark splotchies you see is sweat!

Nice pig! Good eating size. 35 cal 200 gr is good at almost any speed. 2500 is VERY fast. What alloy, pray tell and what did the wound channel and exit look like?

+1-that's what I want to do with my .358. Blammer, you didn't kill A pig- you killed LOTS of future pigs! Texas salutes you! Best, Thomas.

it's WW alloy water dropped.

yep its the 4895 IMR load. (somewhere I have a thread detailing my load development with this)

wound channel was caliber size going in, not as gut shot as you might think as it was kind of a high hit. Exited the shoulder through bone, could stick your thumb in it, not really excessive, could eat up to the hole. Blood shot part was on the place near the skin on the outer side of the hog, stuff you'd trim away when skinning or taking away the fatty layer on the outside. Yes the bullet expanded through the hog and made a nice size exit wound, somewhere between nickle and quarter sized exit hole.

Nice shot! Thanks for sharing the story about your hunt. Some day I hope to go after them with my 35 Whelen, too. Keep the stories coming...

Nah.. Blammer joined a club in Georgia. Right up the road from my club in Norcross. I'm in a stand right now with the night vision trying to get another one. I have 6 for the summer.

Doing well. Not on vacation all the time. YET! Still working, dang it. No pigs this weekend. Got a couple of food plots in. Way better than working.

good to hear, I wanted to ask you how you get your food plots ready?

you have access to a plow or tractor or bushhog?
