View Full Version : What is your insanity?

What guns make you buy them even when you don't need them? Which ones do you have to see when they're in the gun case at the fun store?

I have two guilty pleasures--38 snubbies and Colt Woodsmen. I have 8 or 9 38 snubbies and my avatar demonstrates my addiction to the old Colt 22's. What can't you get enough off?175401175402175403175404175405175406

I am guilty in an other way. I want a 45 70 don't need it, but the cartridge fascinates me, something about sending a slow slug down range. This place gets me going on guns, I don't need as well I saw a 44 mag. stubby looks cool I want one. When I go into the lgs and the gun feels so good I just got to get it.

My particular form of insanity is K frame Smith & Wesson 38 special and 357 mag revolvers. I already have more than I "NEED". They just feel so right in my hand and shoot so well.

Cheap ones do it to me every time.

Can't even go eat breakfast out of town and I spot a WTS S&W 27-2 add pinned up on the board. The $275 price tag had me on my phone before I even ate.

Ruger Mk III 22/45's my wife and I each have one. Not really what I would define as "useful" in most cases.
Not going to stop anybody in their tracks but they do shoot. It is my favorite gun to shoot at the pistol range.

Couple of weeks ago I had a good day, 10 rounds in one hole that you could cover with a bottle cap at 20 feet. But I cheated, I was siting down thus more stable platform.

For the last few years mine has been the small caliber rifle cartridges. Built a 222 to shoot cast with when 22's got expensive and scarce. Recently built a 20 practical as a varmit gun. Already have a 22-250 for that. Just find it amazing what a small little pill can do when pushed really fast. Never was into the going fast thing until recently. The performance of these little cartridges in the 200-300 yard range is amazing. Always thought wildcats were interesting.

I guess I'm kind'a an EEOC looney? All sorts of things attract me. Neat old well used but well maintained rifles at a good price. Older revolvers, well appointed custom autos, but of all the things that stir my passions, the old Schuetzen rifles are my absolute top weakness. Don't see many around here any more, and I've never been able to afford one when I've had the luck to encounter them. Nowadays, handguns are my most used guns, and the ones I profit most from shooting. OM Ruger SA's are a favorite, but the new Flat Tops are really impressing me. Nice real stag or ivory grips would do it. I have my eye out for a good SA with real ivory grips now. Probably won't be able to afford it when I find one now, but .... a guy can at least aspire to get lucky, can't he?

Any double action revolver with a semi-uncommon chambering. Don't get me wrong, I love 38 special, 357 magnum, and 44 magnum revolvers. But I am a sucker for double action revolvers that are chambered for centerfire cartridges other than those 3.

Among handguns it's still Colt SAA's with old S&W DA revolvers coming in a very close second. Long guns....just about anything German, Austrian or British that is chambered for an unavailable cartridge or better yet one I've never heard of or read about.

I tend to become enamored with different guns over the years. A BFR 45-70 with a 6 inch barrel (7.5 inch if you include the cylinder) got past my defenses a while back. Of course I don't need to worry about grizzly bears in Texas, but you never know. I also do have a weak spot for the small .32 caliber handguns though. I don't know, there is just something about the .32 ACP, .32 S&W, 32 H&R Magnums that seem to call to me. I even bought some .308 chamber inserts for the .32 H&R, .32 S&W rounds too. Old military rifles get my fancy from time to time too.

I have a habit of destroying their value by refurbishing them. Oh well. I have a rifle that looks and works like it was brand new. Marlin levers come in a close second. Remington taking over is what killed collecting more. I reuse to pay current prices for a utility rifle. If I didn't have them already it would be different. But I'm not in need of any.

I have a taste for milsurps and anything that is more to the obscure/weird side. Guns that are of high quality, fit & finish. I know, pretty vague but about the only gun I have multiples of is Mosin Nagants. I think I have 7 of them? But who's counting right! I also have a soft spot for anything S&W.

At the top of the lust list right now:

175469
The new CZ-75 SP-01 Shadow 2! :happy dance:
I do shoot USPSA and I like hot rod race guns and I recently put a few mags through a fellow shooter's previous generation Shadow/Custom Shop gun and what an awesome rig. I have lusted for a CZ-75 for some time, they just feel right in my hands and the Shadow..... Pure bliss! It points so naturally for me and I shoot it well, like the bullets are laser guided to the Alpha zone! Soon as possible I want to get my hands on a Shadow 2.

Another gun born out of competitive shooting sports that I'd really like to get:
175474
S&W Model 52-2, Mid-range .38 special Wadcutter

Gotta have a revo on the lust list and this ones a doozie:

Everyone refers to Ruger's as "tanks", but you would be very hard pressed to find a tougher tank than this masterpiece. Not only is it incredible robust but it is also very refined and of very high quality.

Need did someone mention need. I have about 16 pistols and revolvers to play IDPA with and I am now looking at a Turkish copy of a compact Beretta. Linda might beat me to death if I buy it but then maybe she won't.

I have to admit other than a Uberti El Patron 5 1/2" in 45Colt I think I am or maybe finally done. My recent purchase of a Model 10 5" pretty much cured my itch.

The Turks bought the rights to produce the 92 and variants from Beretta. Guns are made on modern CNC equipment provided by Beretta and in some respects are better than the Beretta's. They sell for a third of new Beretta's up here. Turkey gunsmiths have been producing quality firearms since Columbus rowed across the ocean. CZ Shotguns for CZ are produced there as well. The quality of the build is better than my Ruger Convertible by a lot.

Turkey shift to radical Islam? They just had over 50 children killed by a ISIS bomber and in response sent their army into Syria against ISIS supported by US air power for cover. Where do you get your information from? Simply amazing. Turkey is one of the few true democracies in the area along with Israel and is a member of NATO.

In the 50's I was going to school at Colorado A and M (now Colo. State) and worked in a small local gun store in my off hours...you know the kind..wood floors, several show cases with the handguns on display....big long rack across the back with all the used long guns....Like everyone else in those days we had little money and loved to hunt in the mountains (also needed to feed a Wife and 2 kids)...We bought Milsurps (usually 1917 Enfields or Model 98 Mausers or Springfields) for near nothing...Had a couple of buddies that did great gunsmithing work that I could trade stuff with...I had several beautiful, well built and super accurate rifles....one 30-06 for elk and deer...one 25-06 for antelope and a couple of "spares" to just enjoy shooting.

Today I search the "for sale" ads for the super high quality conversions that are still around...no I don't cut up anything that is not already sporterized....I've found several wonderful rifles...beautiful wood, beautiful polish and blue....well modified and great to own, to shoot and to just get out and handle now and then. Don't hunt any more but love the memories from those kinds of rifles...I hand load and really enjoy the accuracy that is available.

HI...

My main focus as a shooter has always been handguns, mostly single-action revolvers although I have a fair collection of DA revolvers and bottom feeders. I also have several rifles for big game hunting and more shotguns than I really need.

Currently contemplating acquiring a pair of SA revolvers, either in .45Colt or .44Special. Thinking really hard about Taylor & Co. SA revolvers in stainless or nickle in .44Special, although the brass-grip case hardened framed Ubertis in .45Colt are calling my name. I would also like to find a good deal on a lever-action carbine in either of those calibers. I like the case-hardened frame rifles but I fear the added cost may push me toward the less expensive blued or brass versions...gotta make a decision on that.

I hope to retire in the next 6-10 months,at which point I would like to have a couple of new bolt-action rifles to use at the gun club for target shooting. Something along the lines of a .243 and a .308 or similar calibers. Also have a hankering for a single-shot .45/70.

So, my particular insanity is having too many interests shooting-wise. I haven't bought a gun for myself in a year and a half, although I have bought a couple for my son as Christmas and birthday gifts, so I am due to buy at least a couple. I may go on a gun shop tour Saturday with my son to see what I can find in the used gun market, just to prime the pump so to speak before I buy anything else. Used BlackHawks run about $350-425 in this area and I have bought several in the past that were essentially new in various calibers including .357Mag, .41Mag and .45Colt. If I were to stumble across such a deal in .45Colt or ,even better, in .41Mag I would find it hard to resist.

That said, I do have a few good friends who can turn a decent Mauser action into a very close replica at a price I can live with. Actually, that my wife does not roll her eyes at too much. I realize that this is the pistol forum, but enough posts on rifles are now posted so I'll post my particular weakness.

Anything made at the US Government's Springfield Armory usually will come home with me if it is in 85% or better condition. All of these get shot from time to time and all will hold surprisingly small groups with both cast and jacketed bullets.

Pulled the pin and decided to let the Queen breath. I just bought a Girsan Regard Yavuz Compact in 9MM. Gun is the shorter version of the 92FS made in Turkey. Mags are made in Italy by Mecgar and are identical to the Beretta mags (I have five I use in my Beretta CX4 Storm Carbine. Guns are well regarded for their quality of workmanship ie fit and finish. If I like this one I will pick up the FS as well.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it insanity, but I like custom and semi-custom revolvers. Mostly single actions but I do have one double action that has been rechambered and rebored. If I can't get out to shoot them, I can just get them out and handle them.

Another slightly less "like" is military surplus rifles. They are still less than a full custom single action but I still remember what they sold for in the late 50's. I couldn't afford them then either.

My insanity is old and new boolit moulds . I can't walk by a table at a yard sale or flea market with $5.00 moulds for sale without buying most of them...regardless of condition ! I have to avoid the NOE store....just way too much temptation there.

All guns drive me wild but. . .

My insanity is H&R and NEF single shot Handi-Rifle and Pardner shotgun. Over at the GBO forum we refer to it as "Handihaulic".

I also love orphan guns that need a little TLC. I frequent the pawn shops (Gun orphanage) looking for them. Here's a recent example:

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160918/b762304b54f97dc7ec8d68dac2003d4d.jpg

A Ruger 44 Carbine that was carried alot but seems to be in relatively in good shape. It's definitely a shooter. It is the early model with the tube mag.

I've slowed a bit on rifles and shotguns and my focus has turned to pistols and revolvers.
