I've always wanted a 30/30 bolt action rifle. A friend found this one at an auction a few days ago and it's now in my safe.

It's virtually unused with a Redfield JR mount and rings and a Weaver K6 scope on it. Almost all my shooting is with iron sights, but I might leave the scope on and see what it does.

Sadly, due to upcoming hunting trips in my home state, Arizona and Wyoming for doves and sage grouse, I won't get to shoot it for a month or so.

I got the bug for one of those a few years ago. Never was sure why as it's an odd combination. Say, how's the magazine deal with the rims? To be honest I never really pursued it very long.

It's a single stack magazine, so it's just loading the rounds with the top rim in front of the lower round's rim.

A little research shows that the 30/30 and the 44 Magnum 788s were only made from 1967 to 1970. The rifle in other calibres was produced from 1967 to 1983.

Funny, when it was in production, I had no interest them. Now I find them at least useful and I'm looking forward to loading the 30/30 in a bolt rifle.

Wow, looks brand new....great find!
Hope to find one just like it one day. Wish i had bought one like i wanted to back in the day lol. Sadly i was going through my magnumitis days when the 788's were new and on the shelves. I've shot several 788's that belonged to friends over the years in different calibers and they were all shooters, even with factory ammo.

Yours certainly looks to be in fine shape...hope it shoots as good as it looks for you.

That one is a keeper. If it shoots great. And it will. Because it's a 788. The scope is older than the gun but if it is clear I'd leave it there because it looks Right. If you want to kennel it while you are hunting I'll take good care of it. Best, Thomas.

I think you will be pleased...I have two left handed ones...a .308W and 6mm Rem. both are great shooters. Take good care of the magazine...they are getting hard to find and very pricey.

Heavens yes, leave the scope on.
It looks right, and I expect you'll find that rifle is very accurate. They usually are. The scope will help you take advantage of that accuracy.

You scored a great and rare rifle - congratulations!
Like Scharfschuetze, I thought they were a foolish combination while they were in production, and I had no desire to own one. Now I cherish my 788 .30-30 and wish I had a .44 to go with it. So soon we get old - so late we get smart. If only I'd bought several of each back in the day.

I have always wanted one as well. They are not cheap. Nice gun.

finding something it won't like will be the hard part.
I have the 340 and the 325 versions of bolt rifles and they in now way compare in quality to the Remington [can't believe I just typed that]
but I haven't found anything they won't feed or shoot well just yet.
everything from loverign designs to the rcbs flat points have done well.
the rcbs 165 silhouette makes it look a bit like a 3/4 sized 30-40 round but shoots very well out to 300+ yds.

I had mine out today, still shoots good. I bought mine back in the mid 80s. I haven't put a jacketed bullet down the barrel since I got it. I won't say what I paid back then. You'll like it.

I have one in 243 and it shoots good. It was my first rifle that i bought in 1976. Have taken many deer and a few hogs with it.

From the photo, looks like it has a walnut stock-you really did good. Most had birch stocks.

I think that is the first 788 I have seen with a Monte Carlo hump on the stock.

After buying and shooting my first one in .222, it seems like I have to pick up and at least look at every one I see in a gun shop. My current one is a .243 carbine.

When I was in high school in the early 1980's the local Matco store was going out of business and eventually marked their 788's down to $69.99. I wish now I had had Dad buy me at least one of them; I had a job and the money but I was sixteen or seventeen and not really as smart as I thought I was, I just thought they looked ugly.

From 1967 to 1979 the 788 had a Monte Carlo stock; the early ones were walnut. The bottom metal was proud and the deer calibers had 22" barrels;varmint cals had 24". In 1980 they changed the Birch stock to straight comb with rounded forend, inletted the bottom metal, swept the bolt handle back, and the deer cals got 18-1/2" barrels. A 788 22-250 in 1972 started my lifelong love for that cartridge. I've always wanted one in walnut/30-30. Best, Thomas.

What a beautiful rifle. I was too slow on the draw for one at a local store near me. Had a 788 in stock for about a week before I decided I wanted it. Then it was gone.... enjoy it. I love the 30-30

Congratulations - You bought one of the only rifles Remington has made that can out shoot their Model 700's.
