I was visiting my sister this past week. She has a Colt Ar15 match rifle manufactured in 1998. It shoots VERY well.
It has a removable carry handle that attaches to a rail on the top.
It is marked 223 on the receiver. The barrel is stamped 5.56 match 1-9.
Does this indicated that it can handle 5.56 ammo without issues?

My sister has hunted ever since she was able to keep both ends of the gun off the ground and is an excellent shot. Don't make her angry if you are within 400 yards. She will let you pick which eye to put the bullet into under 250 yards.
She typically takes 3-4 deer and at least 1 elk every year as well as filling tags for others on group hunts. The group hunt guys out there love her. She always has some one to hunt with.

Is she married?

With AR rifles the stampings on the receiver matter little, it is what is stamped on the barrel. In your case the rifle will handle both 5.56 and 223. It is when you fire 5.56 ammo in a gun marked .223 that you could run into high pressure problems.

Is she married?

No, but I don't think she is interested in being married.

Thanks. That is what I hoped but wanted some extra input.

I was joking of course tazman. I promise I wasn't trying to fix up my oldest brother so we could hunt with her.....! Personally I've never had a problem with 5.56 in a .223 chamber but then I don't BUY much ammo preferring hand loads. Best, Thomas.

the difference is the throat.
if your rifles barrel is marked 5.56 it has the longer throat and can deal with the higher pressures the round is loaded to.
