I'm trying to finger out weather to try some cast in my "new to me"95 win in 30/03..In my experience cast accuracy seems to start at 35 cal as the bare min. I mean accuracy. I call one ragged hole at 50 and sub moa at 100 to be accurate. I imagine bore wont be perfect. Wonder if I should stay J in a smaller not so perfect bore

Read the 30-30 thread under Cast Boolits. 1 1/2 in groups @ 100 yd. Also, check out Junior's article @ http//www.castbullet.com/shooting/accu.htm Dale

Nice looking rifle Charger! I was thinking about this very subject the other day while I spent about 6 hours on the range with three 30 caliber rifles. I think in general, that the larger caliber rifles are easier to work through load development but in the longer run it all works out. I think I would try to work with the lead bullets with a rifle like you have, the bullets will have less wear on your barrel.

I'm thinkin maybe what they lack in radial contact a fella can make up with a good long mold. Hey you still got them 38/55 molds commin huh?

Get an RCBS 30-180FN and start there. It can be done without too much problem given a gun capable of it in the first place.

ya well this is issue #2. The bore aint exactly gleaming, and in my experience rugged bores dont lend to cast

Get that thing slugged up and see what ya got first , then for starters I would look at a good for caliber GCed boolit and maybe some 3031 behind it .
Just an idea .

I've seen some pretty rough bores do quite well with cast bullets of the appropriate type.

As mentioned I'd slug the throat and the bore. If the bore is .309 or smaller then the RCBS 30-180-FN is an excellent choice. You've a long neck on that cartridge and probably a long throat also. That RCBS bullet has a long bearing surface and should do well. If the bore is over .309 then I'd suggest a Lyman 311311467 or 311466. Both are Lovern designs and usually cast on the large size (my 311466 drops .314 bullets and they size down quite well to .311/.312 or even down to .308). Another good mould that is readily availabel and shoots very well in worn .30 cals is Lee's C312-185-1R. Sized at .312 these shoot quite well in .30 cals. The nose size is larger than .30 cal bullets so it rides the rifling much better.

Beautiful old rifle there, I'd just have to give her a whirl with cast.....
