I thought they wore sandals?

I'm more partial to this one about the sandals:

Deuteronomy 25

5 (http://biblehub.com/deuteronomy/25-6.htm)When brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her to himself as wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her. 6 (http://biblehub.com/deuteronomy/25-6.htm)“It shall be that the firstborn whom she bears shall assume the name of his dead brother, so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel. 7 (http://biblehub.com/deuteronomy/25-7.htm)“But if the man does not desire to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to establish a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’ 8 (http://biblehub.com/deuteronomy/25-8.htm)“Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him. And if he persists and says, ‘I do not desire to take her,’ 9 (http://biblehub.com/deuteronomy/25-9.htm)then his brother’s wife shall come to him in the sight of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face; and she shall declare, ‘Thus it is done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.’ 10 (http://biblehub.com/deuteronomy/25-10.htm)“In Israel his name shall be called, ‘The house of him whose sandal is removed.’

I guess they wanted to keep it in the family.

I guess they wanted to keep it in the family.

Jewish tradition and customs dictated that family members such as the woman in your post were to be taken in or cared for . There was a system and customs in place to protect them and help them fit into the community through their extended family .
Read the book of Ruth and you will find more .

All the books of the bible teach and inspire . The book of Ruth is nick named The Book of Love . Ruth and Boaz were never witnesses to miracles , the voice of GOD , they never fought Satan , they knew hardship , they struggled to do what was right , heck they were just folks like us , trying to do the best they could . That is the amazing story .

This story occurred about 1200 years before the birth of Christ (by best reckoning of more learned than me ) . Israel was in a state of chaos , it was a hard time, there was no central or main authority . Each man did right in their own eyes .

Read the book ! I will put it up in the old King James for the old hardheads like me and a 'newer' translation for easier understanding. You will be rewarded ! Will talk about that hopefully another time .

There are a number of lessons in the book of Ruth. I was always struck by Ruth's loyalty and devotion to Naomi, and how it paid off for both of them.

I chose my forum name here not because I could compare to Boaz. Boaz was an aspiration , a goal unachievable but something to work to . I am not Boaz but still I hope to hold him up , he was a good , honorable , GODly , caring , loving , generous , determined, sympathetic , insightful , brave , devout follower of the one true living GOD that TRIED to do his best ! Not a hero . Nothing spectacular , .............Just tried to do his best for GOD . HE IS TO BE ESTEEMED AND ADMIRED ! We would do well to be like him .

Wow this simple thread is drawing Satan's followers . It is threating to him to even come here . Beware the aspersions of him though his followers.

Yes ! Most said quote of Ruth .

And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
