What is a 541 worth these days? I passed one up at an auction today and just wondering how hard I should kick myself.

So what did the gun go for at Auction?

No idea. A generic .22 rifle will go for $150-300 around here. These are the same guns I was paying $5-25 for in the early 1980's. Target rifles, if advertised as such, tend to go for a lot more.

I will say that if I wanted to punch paper, or play some of the range games, the Model 541 would be high on the list of rifles I looked for.

Ordered a 541-T in 1990-3 while station iin MO for 320-340. In great condition 450-650 plus. The T is the desired model which mine was supposed to be but it's hard to find competent help. It finally came in when deployed and they lost the paperwork. Check on Rimfirem Central.

541's came in a few flavors, std. sporter. heavy barrel sporter which was a popular silhouette rifle and target model.

The price on the target models dropped some when the CMP sold them years ago. Not sure what the numbers are, sometimes it seems to be regional in pricing.

You can also look at the 540 model rifles, similar in appearance and somewhat nicer finish. Built in target and sporter models.

I bought a 541X from the CMP in around the year 2000 for around $240. It was new and unfired in the box with the instructions and front sight inserts. Because I have one, I kinda pay attention to them at gun shows, see what they are asking. Doesn't appear to be a common rifle, but the last few I've seen at the Reno shows are over $500. ( asking ) Saw one still in the CMP shipping box with all the papers on a sellers table and he was asking $750. By the time I got past that table again it was gone. ( who knows what it actually sold for ) Watching Gun Broker or the other auction sites would give you a better idea where the price point is. It's a fine, well made rifle but the plastic magazine leaves something to be desired, and replacement mags don't seam easy to come by.

Live and learn, I dropped off at 100 bucks, it sold for 110. I han not checked it out before the auction, so not sure of the condition.

Was it a 541 or a 514?
541's are a magazine fed repeater that bring good money and 514's are a single shot that may bring
150 if it's in great shape.

I could not tell you with 100% certainty, I was standing well back with quite a few people between me and the guy holding it up. It was billed as a 541 target master is all I could really tell you though.
There was 5 or 6 guns sold and they all sold cheap, EXCEPT for a remington M77 something or other mag, which brought better than new price, it was scoped and thought it might have had an expensive scope to bring what it did. You can never tell at auctions though.
