Has anyone seen one in real life? A single shot rifle set up to enjoy all the different levels of .429 Magnum glory would be a wonderful thing.

I know it's not in the same league as the Ruger, but I always thought that the H&R .44Mag would be fun, particularly if chambered for .445 Supermag for added flexibility.

Not me. I did have a chance to buy one of the No. 1's in .357 Magnum once, but didn't have the disposable income.

They have not been released by Lipsey yet. Hopefully in the next thirty days.

Don't have a .44 Magnum in a #1 but do have one in a #3. Since it was mentioned I do have a #1 in 357 Mag.

I was excited about the No 1 in 44 mag until I saw the 1:38" twist in the specs. That eliminates most of my 44 molds from use in it. Why not the same twist the 77/44 has, which is 1:20"?

I had John Taylor fabricate a 20" twist Green Mountain barrel in .44 Magnum to fit my Beretta 412 folding shotgun in .410, and have been extremely happy with it. The 26" barrel folds and packs in a 2-suiter suitcase and is the ideal traveling combo, fitted with XS ghost ring peeps and sighted 3" high at 100 yards, with factory 240-grain JSP, while subsonic bloopers with 6 grains of Bullseye and Accurate 43-230EB are quiet and and shoot to the sights at 25-40 yards. Does everything from bunnies to black bear.

This is one of the coolest things I've read about in a long time; would love to see pics if convenient. :)

Years ago I wanted a single shot in 44 mag and 357 mag humm. Built 44 mag on a martini and 357 on a rolling block. They are fun guns iron sights and bust clay pigeon on the burm at 100 all day. By the way I used 1 in 32 for the 44 mag cause that was the Sharon blank I had and with 240 grn semi it don't miss. Used 1 in 14 for my 357.

If it is in fact 1:20", I'll be ordering one up. However, Ruger spec sheet has it at 1:38". I guess I'll call Ruger and get the final answer from them.

I've had several#3s in 44 mg, never had any trouble with 240 Jhps shooting accurately. Shot
same load as Ruger 44carbine, which shooting cast in is a no-no because of gas port. I haven't
owned a 357, never saw one. I have 223-375w-45/70, they are all good shooters. I thought I
owned them all, 357 must be rare. The only one that was a little disappointing was the 22 Hornet,
but I have had several Hornets disappoint me. Around my neck of the woods excellent condition
#3s are bringing right around $1000, reguardless of calibre. I'm in Ohio so any rifle in legal cals.
bring top dollar.

A year ago or more I had a chance to pick up a new old stock H&R Handi rifle in .444 with composite camo stock. You want the ultimate .44mag, that is it. Mild to wild and anything in between.

I load mine with the .430 310 gc wide meplat round nose lee mold.
13 grains of Red Dot makes that girl whistle and if I can hold it gives me cloverleafs.

Somedays I can do it others not. About 10 of those off the bench and I'm ready to switch to something lighter. But it is a joy to shoot. I doubt I will ever get around at this point to pulling the trigger on one of those big shaggy plains roamers. But if I ever did that girl could do the job just fine.

The 357s I see most often are the California Highway Patrol ltd. edition models. I don't know if that is the only one Ruger made in 357 or if it was a std. offering once.

Just as a FWIW, another neat little single shot that was made in .44 mag and .45 LC was the Win. or Browning Low Wall repros. In the Deluxe editions, they had some knock-your-eye-out wood - really nicely figured and burled - and a tang sight. Kind'a spendy, but such beauties! I had a chance at one in .45 LC for $750 - on consignment due to a divorce - and didn't have the $$$ for it at the time. I'll always be saddened when I think of that VERY neat and useful gun getting away from me. Again, just a FWIW, but along similar lines as the OP.

Don't need one, I don't have time to shoot what I have, but I've got a couple of rifles that I'm probably going to get rid of to at least take a little of the bite off of the price of this thing. A No 1 in 44 mag is pretty much my dream rifle. I know there are probably better options all the way around, but yeah I'm going to have to take one in the wallet. Oh well I guess I can't be good all the time.

The 357mag #1's were the CA highway patrol rifle, but Ruger also made some 357's without the HP rollmark. Those are rarer. I have a HP version which I rechambered to 357max. A #1 44mag rechambered to 445sm would be sweet

I can down load my 45-70 Ruger close to 44 mag energy, but nice caliber for Ruger No 1

I wonder what ruger will say about using .44 spl in it since they say don't use .44 spl in the 77 for some odd reason. Would be neat to have one in .44 and .357 as I have recently become a HUGE fan of true carbines.

Also ruger updated the data sheet 1:20 it is!

It's the possibility of getting 'rim locks' with the shorter cartridges in the rotary magazine.
Although I've got one of the 77/44's, I haven't tried .44SPL because .44Mag brass is _way_ more common.
I have shot many .38Spl's in my 77/357 with complete reliability however.

I'm thinking that rim locks may be less of a potential issue in their #1 tho. ;-)

I've never had rim lock with .38 Short colt in my 77 but it does want to migrate up the helical which causes the jam I think. I have lots of .44 spl and some .44 Russian brass....I would really like to try it in the .44/77 as well.

It would be great fun to have .44 russian loads for rabbit plinkers in the #1 though

I have one of the Ruger #1's without the CHP roll markings. Got it from J&G Rifle Ranch in '84-they ran an ad for one month in the Shotgun News. Have a Leupold 4X Compact on it. I also have a Martini cadet that has been rebored and chambered for .357 Cost 37 dollars delivered to my door in'57. The gun mags were full of ads from Winfield arms for these back then. Also bought a cadet action from them for $9.99-later made into a .218 Bee.

They must have started to release them. The 44 mag I ordered last August is supposed to show up on Tuesday or Wednesday.
