my buddy has a .223 with a 14" barrel.
He would like to shoot cast and asked me to make up a few test cartridges for him; I use a Lyman 225415 and load 6 grains of Winchester 231 in my CZ 527.
I have a 20" barrel and it performs reasonably well with 1& 1/2 @ 100 yards.
Anyone have a suggestion for his situation?

Most likely an AR will not cycle with 6 gr. WW231. I use 22 gr. AA2520 with the RCBS 55 gr Flat nose. Brass must be trimmed so that bullet can be crimped for feeding without pushing bullet into case.

I noticed on the Hodgdon burn rate chart that AA2520 is@ 96; we can't obtain that powder here in Calgary; but Winchester 748 is available and is 100 on the burn rate scale.
wondering if 19 - 20 grains of 748 would make an accurate/functioning load?

yes.
use a filler for best results.
19 grs of 4895 is on the cusp too.

Received my .225 die and punch set from Chris Smith and installed them in my Star sizer. It took a while for the lube to fill the die and then we were off and running. Placing gas-checks and running them through the machine. I did about 100 and then ladder loaded 5 for the AR. Will test them this morning.

might wanna weight sort them into small groups [I use .1 weight groups]
before getting too carried away.
