I had cast up my first bullets, Lee 158 gr .357 bullets. After about 3 weeks I got enough done around the house to take my oldest boy, 9, shooting.
I loaded up some .38's to shoot out of the Ruger sp101, and some 45-70's to try out my new Contender handgun barrel. JHP's
I ran a cylinder then let him shoot the rest. He said they were his favorite rounds to shoot yet.
Accuracy was good at 25 yards. Slight leading. I think it needs the throats worked on.
Casting, loading and shooting mild 38's cheaper than .22lr is the best!

Glad the boy likes them. He'll no doubt keep you busy trying to keep up with his appetite to shoot.

If your 9 year old boy is shooting at 25 yards i'm impressed.

What are you sizing the bullets to and what are you using for lube?

Being able to shoot 38's for so cheap is definitely addicting.

What's bethere than casting your own? Swaging your own!

You get to cast your cores and then swage the jackets! Win-win

I am shooting them as cast. I have not slugged the bore. They are the rnfp. Forgot that earlier.
I just lubed them with alox, it's what I had that I could do quickly.
18 acres of ranch burns a lot of time. :-)
So does a full time job.
My son has been shooting since he was 5. I still watch his gun handling VERY closely but he does really well.
My 5 y.o.son? Not ready yet.
My 2 y.o. daughter? She thinks she is ready for everything!! :-)

Few things better than shooting your own hand made product.

There was a guy and his daughter out at the range after work about 3:00 pm. Shooting her pink 10/22. She also shot his AR variant.
Next she was shooting falling plates with 38 wadcutters out of a Smith 686.
Heart warming.
