View Full Version : So Turkey is now taking the place of H&R?

Was in the gun shop yesterday, and they had a new single shot in the rack, made in Turkey. Sort of an H&R, has a safety like a Rossi, but on the right side now. This skeletonized hammer I wasn't sure was even metal. That was not very easy to pull back, overly heavy spring and something dragging internally. Not a very impressive weapon. Certainly not going to replace the H&R.

most gun makers in Turkey are organized under cooperatives and looks like their goal is produce more at lower cost. Their guns usually aren't refined but they shoot. And if you take the time to deburr and tune... Check Hatsan, Huglu (which I've read makes some shotguns for CZ) and I believe Yildiz too... are quite decent guns (no way close to BEST gun).

Dealers can get them dirty cheap and customers wanting to spend less end with them. No way they would take over H&R shares, but maybe Rossi since Taurus is such a *** company who cares not about products quality or even profits for that matter...

Am I wrong or has EAA been importing Turkish guns for a hot minute. SAR, I believe there's a 1911 strain as well.

Do you remember the make of the single shot? Might be worth a look if it's cheap.

The little Yildiz shotguns I see in Academy sports that are very small and light and designed to fold back on themselves like those Berrettas I used to see are real nice guns and I've heard are good shooters.

It is a shame that H&R single shot isn't made anymore. Seems like just about everybody had one as their first shotgun (at least I did) and one of those as a useful "good to have around" gun can't be beat, especially for the cost.

There's a thread on this shotgun in H&R shotguns, at Graybeard Outdoors. As far as quality goes, I can't speak to these guns, but I have a couple of Turkish pistols which are very nice.

We had a thread going about the little Yildiz single .410s and their potential as stubbing projects to make nice little Rook rifles. They are very pretty and handle gracefully. The ones I've seen are hammerless, for good or bad.

Yildiz and Huglu make in fact some nice looking SxS too. I've shot many Hatsan airguns and they became very durable, and their semi auto 12ga are well regarded here and were affordable when still imported...

No it was a brand I had never heard of. Wish I could remember what it was called. But not foreign sounding. I thought it was H&R at first, then saw the safety on the right side. It just felt flimsy, tho guess they couldn't do worse than Rossi if the barrels are at least straight. It was just the shotgun, no mention of rifles. Now if they were smart and made them in various calibers, and you could get barrels, might be onto something.

They do have a H&R 20ga rifled gun I was looking at. Tho a rifled barrel for my pump gun would be less money.

I have a turkish 1911 for my "practice gun"...didn't want to risk messing up a nicer one. Tisa brand, ran around 300, still shoots great just not as refined as the others. I've seen the yildiz ones at academy, they felt a tad flimsy/lightweight to me but they looked decent enough for the price point. Already have a beretta so i'm not in the market for another pump shotgun.

KHAN maybe? Sounds like Khar, which might be familiar...

No not khan, it sounded American. I tried google but no help. Turney has been doing that changing the name on things so its more American sounding, maybe you wont notice where its made.

With all the good used H&R's on the market, I'd buy a used H&R if I wanted an H&R; not a Turkish crapshoot!

I have a Tisas 45 1911 I have put like 4-5 K through it very accurate, just change the spring when it needs it. I have a 7mm08 CVA hunter much nicer than a H&R and cheaper, and accuracy is better. It is made in Spain.

Sure looks like it, but saw no mention where it was made. And the hammer was different on the one I saw.

In many areas the used H&R guns have almost dried up or the cost is greater than a new bolt.

Just did a quick search of Gunsamerica and Gunbroker, and doesn't seem to be a shortage of H&R singles for $250-$400. Many of them listed as unfired.

Any chance of being an import by INTERARMS? I also have seen (on the net) some chinese made clones of the H&Rs... Century imports them, I think.

It will be a cold day in hell before I spend any money with a Muslim enemy state. I know that, at the minute, Turkey is supposedly an ally but they are on the brink of making war on American Forces stationed in Turkey and capturing American Nukes that are stored in Turkey. No money to a tribe that would gleefully slit my throat.

After owning both a CVA and an H&R don't know about the Turkish guns, I'd buy the CVA. Buds has them for under $200, $250 with a scope and sling and gun case. Just saying, if you want a good cheep gun, CVA's are hard to beat a life time warranty and they've been around as long as I can remember.

Whose side was Cuba on in their missile crisis? The Turkish government is treading a narrow path, and risking an ugly reputation for excesses, to maintain a secular society. If you have any evidence that they would gladly slit your throat, you must look for some other reason.

A friend of mine has a pair of inherited Purdeys which he hardly dares to carry around in the boggy and rocky terrain of his hill farm. While on a long engineering contract in Istanbul he bought a cheap Turkish boxlock, and brought it back afterwards, and is very pleased with it. His wife took the only Gordon setter puppy in Turkey to his friends there, and it is currently a marvel among Turkish shooters for its professionalism.

Huglu (which I've read makes some shotguns for CZ)
This is my Huglu made CZ O/U. I have no complaints. It's a really nice gun that shoots well. And the quality is well above what I paid.

I live in rural Ohio, my LGS has a 1/2 dozen nice H&hrs, IJs, and Savage/ Stevens single barrels.
Nice ones priced average $125-$150. I'm talking nice older model guns, with tanged & walnut
stocks. People walk right pass them to buy one of the foreign Junkers. Had a buddy buy a Turk
1911, it functions but I wouldn't take it to Camp Perry. The interior of it looks like they used a beaver for a mill.
