I got a flyer on this. I think the final cost after rebate was $240. I have a $25 card so $215 for a new rifle. My wife and I tried out the ones I bought us for Christmas for about $240 last week while on vacation (what vacation dioes not include guns?) .243 and .308 for her and I. The bolts were a little stiff but they grouped fine with factory and handloads should tighten them up so I will have no problem hunting with them. A gun your not worried about getting beat up while hunting or a spare is a good thing in my book and at this price they are hard to pass up

If they have the FVs with rebate again I think I'm gonna get one just for the action. The last new Savage action I had was a little stiff and scratchy. I cleaned it well then slopped it up good with TW25 and opened & closed the bolt maybe 2-300 times. Its really smooth now.

I own 3 Savage Axis rifles, a 22-250, 7mm-08, and .223. All of them will shoot 3 shot groups under a dime and 5 under a nickel. The 22-250 will do 5 you can cover with a cigarette but at 100 yds. I have been thinking about buying one in a 308 but I have lots of 308 rifles. I can't say enough good about the savage axis. They are shooters right out of the box.

Best wishes

I'm really happy I bought one of these (in 243) last Christmas.
I added a $99 (clearance) Boyds stock and the redneck trigger spring replacement (from a ball point pen).
jonp's thread (I posted about the modifications)

Thanks JonB. I remember starting that thread and ended up buying the 243 and 308. It shows how busy we are that we just got around to trying them out. The bolt action and trigger leave a little to be desired but for the money I sure wouldn't pass one up it you are in the market for a "meat gun". I'm thinking of adding one or two during the sale maybe 30-06 and 223 or something. IDK.

I want to cut up a Savage Axis 223.

Chop the barrel on each end - set it back re-chambered for 22TCM, and cut to 16.5" with threads for a suppressor.

A custom mag well/block would hold the factory (Rock Island) 38 super single stack mag.

Lyman Mold # 225438 is a 44gr round nose gas check bullet that is perfect for this cartridge to allow 22 win mag (rim fire) performance and with a few grains of Red dot or Green dot would be cheaper to load than you can buy the cheapest 22LR.

^^^^^ I'd like to see that when you get it done. Be a great substitute for a 22mag or 22 Hornet.
