View Full Version : Well...am I nearly done??

In a month I turn 66. I am wondering if I am done getting stuff.

A cursory inventory shows I have enough lead to produce another 140,000 bullets in addition to approximately 50,000 cast and 10,000 jacketed bullets currently on hand. I have my own range so much of the lead will be recycled - call it a life time supply.

I have over 12,000 pistol and rifle cases. Not to worried about them as many will be sold when supplies get hard to come by.

Over 10,000 shotgun hulls. 25,000 wads. 3000 lbs of shot.

Primers I am a bit light on. 35,000 rifle; 55,000 pistol; 50,000 shotgun.

Powder, over 150 lbs.

Factory and loaded ammo: .22LR - guessing at 15-20,000 rds. Not planning to use many as I load 9mm and .38 for less than current cost of .22's. About 5000 rounds of shotgun ammo, and a few thousand of rifle and pistol.

I cannot cast much due to a nerve injury. MRI is scheduled for next week and if the news is not good, I may buy a Master Caster and three molds for it. I should probably get one anyway but easier to justify if the quack says to ease up on the left arm.

With Trump making a fool of himself, I am worried that Hillary is going to win and we know what will happen then. In preparation, I see the Master Caster as a probable investment - $1500 with three molds (9mm, .38, and .40) Add another 50 lbs of powder ($1000) as it is available at decent prices now. Add another 50,000 pistol primers - $1500.

Total cost looks like about $4000 and I am set for life. Am I missing anything?

It is sad that I find myself thinking like this. This country is heading down a bumpy road and I fear we will never recover. The last great free country will be gone. I moved here from Canada over 25 years ago as I saw the signs of socialism there and hated the thought. I never imagined we would soon be on the same path.

In case you haven't been paying attention, the country HAS been on a bumpy road for the last 10 years. As far as your stock of supplies, I think it would only be fair that if a "revolution" once again started, it should be at your back door.:bigsmyl2:

Yes, perhaps;

Many city ordinances have fire codes which utilize NFPA standards - which cites 10K maximum primers (among other things) in a residence.

And most homeowners insurance policies have clauses in their coverage which relates to city fire ordinances & NFPA standards.

Whether any homeowners lose sleep over city ordinances is certainly up to individual choice; but it would be a bummer to have a house fire and not be covered by homeowners insurance because the insurance company was given an 'out' from a fire department investigation.

Edit: For anybody with an interest, here is the relevant text from NFPA 495:

You know what they say, "It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings." At almost age 74 I'd like to think I'm done acquiring, but things keep wandering in the door. Yesterday I purchased a pound of Tail Boss. But it felt awful light, and when I read the label it said "8 oz." It also said "Made in Australia." So, I'm pretty certain I'm going to need about a dozen more..........:)

Trailboss is one of my favorites and I have 6 "containers" with which to load from.

All the stuff that can go boom is in a heated and insulated area of the pole barn. If some bureaucrat wants to enforce the rules, I will build a bunch of small out buildings. No permit needed if less than 100 sq ft. With 20 acres I have lots of space. Living in the middle of nowhere has some other advantages.

jonp,
I started about 15 years ago. I called it my Shooting 401k plan. If one does not prepare, they are preparing to fail. Putting up items slowly over time is a smart move for most. I always tried to only consume half of what I used every year whenever I could. As a result, I have never gone without during the shortages. And when stuff was on sale, I stocked up to the extent I could afford to.

You're light on rifle primers. A lot of us guys are all about the same age here. The single most important thing we need to think about is our health. Eat good stuff that we know where it was grown or produced. Plenty of exercise no matter how much we don't feel like it.

Thank you country gent. I used to go through about 20,000 rounds a year. It has diminished for a variety of reasons. Health being one of them.

I had planned to shoot over 2000 rounds at the Ohio and Michigan State shoots but had to withdraw after 100 rounds. Could not hold the gun up. But I am a stubborn old fool and do not give up. If I need to revert to pistol shooting, my powder stock will last three times as long. LOL

I wouldn't be at your back door, but I'd happy to find you alive and kicking ;). You have a fair amount more than I, but who knows how it will all shake out in the end. Bumpy road and all I wouldn't trade this country for any other in the world.

Would be happy to just have your knowledge and experience over the next 30 years I have to catch up ;).

I'm ten years behind you, and probably near equal in quantity and still think I won't outlive my supply. Getting old sucks in some ways...but I figure I'll be able to do a lot more shooting, metal detecting and fishing once I'm able to retire. So many hobbies, so little time. I Thank God for good health and prosperity. I hope to still be shooting when I'm in my 70's!

Done, is a relative term. I don't think I'll ever be done until my address changes to a permenate one.

:kidding:No you're not done. You still need arthritis, swollen ankles, thicker glasses and reluctant operation of all major parts.

Dverna, when it comes to being "done" buying and stocking up stuff, I always defer to Larry Potterfield's recommendation of "just one more!" Works for me! [smilie=l:

I never have understood why folks advertise all their inventory of firearm related things in a public forum.

I never have understood why folks advertise all their inventory of firearm related things in a public forum.

Part of the reason is to make people think. If people do not stock up on stuff when prices are decent and items are available they are grasshoppers. These grasshoppers are the ones who piss and moan when primers, powder etc get scarce and vilify "hoaders". Well....ants are not hoaders...they prepare for bad times.

There are bad times ahead. Prepare or suffer the consequences. I have no pity for the grasshoppers. They are Democrats, or at least latent Democrats.

I do not have a lifetime supply of componets, if SHTF tommarow im golden. The majority of our components are used up durring practice, competition, and shooting for fun. If all of a sudden the supply stops most of us would greatly cut back on our usage. And no i haven't stoped squirreling away stuff

My components get used up as well. I have to scrounge to find replacements. I'm at the range a couple times a week. Was at the range from 8:30-12:00 today and will spend that much time tomorrow. It's an every week affair for me except about one weekend a month.
