Does anyone have any info or experiences with the Herters 44 magnum??? From what I can gather, they were a ruger copy. They seem to be built really tough???

Herter's line of S/A Power Mags made for them in Germany. About same quality as the Hawes
S/As that were out in same period. They may have come from same maker. I think was a division
of Sauer. They only had one weak point that I ran into. The Cylinder pin was to soft. Extensive
use of heavy loads would " peen" it, till it was riveted in frame under hammer.

Don't know about the 44 Power Mag but I have the .357 version. They were made in W Germany in the sixties by J P Sauer. Mine retailed in the catalog for around $65.00 in 1969, about a 1/4 the price of a Ruger back then. Adjustable rear sight with a long ramp front blade & 6 3/4 inch barrel. Surprisingly accurate and tight. Grips don't interchange with Ruger or any other maker as far as I can figure. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews but can't personally complain. I think the basic revolver was same as Hawes (also made by J P Sauer) but all the Hawes I've seen had fixed sights and a more western six-shooter look. May not be popular but then you very seldom see one for sale. IMO a solid, practical, no frills side arm. Just as accurate as any Ruger (4) I've owned. Just my opinion.

I made a couple of attempts at buying a .401 Power Mag but to no avail!

Could not budge it from it's owner.

From what I have heard people seldom part from the .401 Power Mag. I want a Ruger but I've got my eye on a 44 Herter's 44 Mag that is residing in a local shop. I wish that I could find one in 357 for the right price. Appreciate all the info.

.401 Power Mag? What kind of ammo does that use?

<edit> Ok, Googled it. Sure never heard of .401 caliber! Bet that stuff's hard to find.

Please do not quote me on this or try it for it has been a long day...I thought that I read "Somewhere" that one could use 41 rem mag brass, heat it in the over and run it thru a 40 caliber sizing die?????
