I have a specific question. Blackpowder is not working for me but my homemade 9mm Federal Rimmed (shortened down 357 mag cases to 19mm, charged powder as 9mm and with an 9mm FMJ 115 grain bullet) yes.

Which die set will load 9mm Federal Rimmed? Is it the Lee Precision 38 Short and Long Colt 3-Die Carbide like in here: https://www.amazon.com/Lee-Precision-Short-3-Die-Carbide/dp/B00162UMR2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470603165&sr=8-1&keywords=38+short+colt (https://www.amazon.com/Lee-Precision-Short-3-Die-Carbide/dp/B00162UMR2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470603165&sr=8-1&keywords=38+short+colt).

I'm not familiar with the 9mm rimmed but will tell you what I know. I have a set of Lee's 38 Colt Short/Long Dies

First, if you used 357 brass to make it, you should be able to use 38/357 FL sizing die to size the cases. In my set of 38 Colt Short/Long - my FL die is marked 38 - 357

They'll be too short for the 38/357 expanding die - my powder thru/expander die looks identical to my Lee 9mm die

Seating - try your 9mm die it may work or may not. My seating die is marked 38 S & W L - i.e. S & W Long. If you could come up with an old 38/357 seating die and cut the body down - it will probably work O.K.

Crimping - use your 9mm taper crimp die to put a taper crimp on them. I seat and crimp in two different operations. I use an older RCBS taper crimp die and just put a moderate crimp on my 38 Colt Shorts. All I shoot is my cast and they hold just fine in revolvers - never had an issue with boolit jump.

I load a lot of 38 Colt Short/Long. The shorts are probably not much different that what you are loading? The 9mm is a tapered case if I'm not mistaken (I never have paid much attention as I have 9mm dies). Are you sizing 9mm rimmed in a 9mm FL sizing die or using a 38/357 FL die?

Lee uses dies from other cartridges to make up the 38 Colt Short/Long as you can see from above. If you are using .357 FMJ for projectiles . . . and sizing with a 9mm FL die . . . then a 9mm seating die should work.

Titan (who is a sponsor here - click on banner at top of page) has decent prices on the Lee dies. I would think that the Lee 38 Colt Short/Long should work just fine along with a 9mm taper crimp die. And . . . since you are making your rimmed out of .357 brass . . a standard 38/357 shell holder is going to work just fine.

Maybe someone who loads 9mm rimmed will come along and see something I'm not? Good luck - would love to see photos of what you are doing.

Artful gave you the answer, just read. Although it's been a few years since I've made any, the effort required is well worth it. Just use 38Spl brass and get the right projectiles, meaning with a cannelure already there. I spent way to much time putting in those flippin cannelures than I care to remember.

Grumpa,

I read the post Artfull sent but can not find anything specific if Lee 38 short and Long Colt 3 set dies will work for 9mm Federal Rimmed. I want to have a specific die set just for this 9mm Federal Rimmed.

I loaded the 9mm Federal Rimmed with RCBS 38 spl/357 decap size die. Then both expanding and seating/crimping Hornady 9mm Luger taper crimp dies.

I have the older RCBS 9mm die set, and I'm not going to look for the date stamp. Those used the older roll crimp, which is what you want, not the taper crimp. You want the roll crimp to retard (hold back) the bullet for those, you want that to happen.

Something like the 38 S&W short might work but I don't have those dies. But keep in mind the 38 S&W used a .360 diameter bullet, which is very close to the 9mm Federal, just bigger, and the 38 S&W does use a roll crimp.
