I have a really nice 27-2, older model and would like to put a red dot on it. I don't want to alter it in any way so would it be possible to do so without drilling and tapping it?

Thanks!!

My first thought when in saw your post was (ha!) -Red Dot is put in the case at the charging stage before seating a boolit!

Not sure,,, but a check with Weigand to see if they have a mount that will fit the sight screw holes may help. S&W N frame,,,,!

I seem to recall a scope mount base that used the existing sight screw holes plus some sort of clamp in the "T" cut in the frame. Sorry I don't remember more, but it was a lot of years ago.

Maybe laser grips instead of a red dot?

Have you tried B-Square? I used to have a couple of their 'no-drill' mounts on S&Ws but that was quite a few years back.

B-Square and Weaver both had one at one time. I've used both in the past.

I don't know who makes them, but the173788 Leupold Delta Point red dot kit came with varies revolver mounts and S&W was one of them and they all used existing screw holes.

The older Smiths didn't have holes drilled on top like the new ones do. The Weigand mounts require drilling a hole....I have a SW I did this to. Don't get too hung up on drilling a hole in the Model 27. They make special plugs to put in if you take the scope off that fill the hole and are flush. Also, they don't totally devalue the gun. You might lose fifty bucks (probably won't lose anything at all) and in the meantime you get to enjoy the gun. That has to be worth something.

I went ahead and had my Mod 29-1 drilled. As NSB noted when going back to stock sight
the holes can be filled with plug screws and will be hidden by the factory sight. My 29 has
Leupold mount and rings and an Ultra Dot 1" scope. It sure helps my old (71yo) eyes.173798

If you do decide to tap it, an Allchin mini STS mount and a Burris FastFire are a very low small and light combination.

I have one, and think it was made by B-Square, but I'm not certain anymore. You remove the factory sight and use the existing holes, ( I just found it and it's B-Square). It's 5.5" long and takes Weaver type rings. It will not work with a barrel shorter than 5", also there's a strain screw that bears against the barrel to limit or eliminate vibration of the base. Using a short red dot I don't see why the base can't be cut approximately at the forward limit of the frame. I believe it's as long as it is to mount various scopes.
