can you use this powder in the 44/40 and maybe even the 45 long colt? thanks guys.

Universal is Ok in the 44-40. They show it in the Hodgdon 2016 Annual Manual for reloading magazine. I think it would be in other reloading book references too.

In a strong, modern rifle or revolver, such as a Marlin 1894 or Winchester 1892 clone, or Ruger revolver, you can use Unique data as a guide, but in older guns stay I would stay off the maximum charges listed for Unique when substituting Universal, in the absence of tested data.
