Hello guys! I am curious what is the most popular choice for a heavy weight boolit for a 45-70 BPCR 1885 rifle.

I had a chance to try a few 525 grain Postells from my Browning/Miruko BPCR. They shot amazingly for the 12 or so I tried! I am hoping to try a mold with this design.

What are your favourite molds/bullet styles/choices for hunting heavy weights?

RCBS 45-500-FN, readily available, known to be a good choice, designed for the 45-70 with the crimp groove correctly positioned.

The thing I dont like about the rcbs 45-500fn design is that the bullet will have to travel more than 1/2" to enguage the rifling if you seat it to the crimping groove.

Otherwise I have to seat the boolit out with nearly every lube grove exposed to positively align its self in the bore.

530 grain RCBS RN , weighs 540 with my alloy and 520 gr. Brooks Creedmoor . Both shoot well out to the Ram line.

While not in a browning My 2 favorites in 45 cal for mid to long range are The 535 grn lyman postel bullet loaded to around 1200-1250 fps. And the second is a 550 grn shillouette bullet from Old West Moulds again aropund 1200 fps. both shoopt surprisinlyly well for me out to 500yds. They loose velocity slowly and seem to maintain stability. I shoot these in both a pedersoli sharps 34" barrel 45-70, and a C Sharps Arms Remington Hepburn in 45-90. Again with a 34" barrel. Both are 18 twist. The quick easy way to find out is put an ad in wanted for diffrent 45 cal heavy bullets to test and then you know what your rifle likes and the mould to buy.

The saeco 645 bullet shoots real well to 1000 yds. The BACO 525 gr. money bullet also shoots well. The RCBS 530 gr bullet works good to 800,but can have problems past that due mostly to it big lube grooves. The good ol Lyman postell is never a bad choice, but has been over shadowed by the money bullet designs.

since the op requested a bullet for hunting, that'd probably mean a flat meplat and not a round nosed postell or money. however, typical shot distance and game hunted wasn't mentioned. more than a few bullet mould makers have bpcr style 45's with flat noses from 300 to over 500 grains in weight.
