hey guys,i have a good sized batch of half pure half wheel weight. it also probably has 1-3% tin, because there where a lot of soldered seams in the lead pipe I used for the pure. the question it, is it tough enough as is, to shoot out of my 45-70 at about 1350-1400fps? I am looking for good expansion without the boolit breaking up. also, would this alloy heat treat much, with I am guessing only 1.5-2% antimony (left from the ww's)? my guess is maybe a couple bnh's at most, but I don't have a tester anyways. well, thanks and have a good day! travis

An easy way, pretty accurate too, to test for BHN when you don't have another mechanical means...use pencils. Pay attention to how he explains to do this regarding the prep for the pencil lead and the angle you hold the pencil. I did this before acquiring the Lee tester and was within + or - of 1 BHN.
Theres plenty of dialogue on this forum about it...just search 'pencil BHN test'.
Arsenic is the magic ingredient that enables heat treating, water dropping of the boolit metal and it is generally at .25% in the Clip on wheel weights, so you are good to go there

Yes, it is plenty hard. You can shoot real soft bullets at those velocities. The standard black powder .45-70 is close to that, and it uses like a 30 to 1 (pure lead to tin) bullet. I'm currently shooting bullets cast from alloy collected from a .22 rimfire range. They are very soft. No leading and great accuracy at velocities even above what you are looking for. I use BAC Carnuba Red lube.

yeah, I don't like the idea of beating up my gun, when 1400fps and a 430gr boolit will kill a bison or a grizzley, and the biggest things I hunt are deer and hog.thanks for the input.
