.426" on the originals. Some of the current firearms in 44/40 take .429"

They are talking bullet diameter, but even original barrels often run larger than .430" groove.

Chamber neck diameter limits how large a bullet you can actually use and chamber in your rifle or revolver.

Tight chamber neck which precludes using a large enough bullet to fit, when combined with large groove diameter is recipe for poor accuracy.

Cast your chamber and shoot as large a bullet as chambers and extracts a loaded round freely. Min. SAAMI chamber is .443 neck diameter, but modern .44-40 rifles and revolvers assembled with .44 Magnum spec .430 groove diameter barrels require chamber necks to be .447" to alloy use .430" bullets in Starline brass. If revolver cylinder throats are smaller than .429" you can forget anything resembling normal accuracy if your gun has a modern .44 Magnum dimensioned barrel. I had John Taylor rechamber my .44-40 Ruger Vaquero which had too tight .443 chamber necks with .425" cylinder throats to provide .447" chamber necks and .430" cylinder throats and it is now a tack driver instead of shooting shotgun patterns.

No clue, check the cylinder with pin gages and size bullets to fit cylinder throats.

It really depends on whose 44-40 and made in what year and century. Significant variation exists between then and now. Also even with the old time revolvers, cylinder mouth diameter was sometimes less than perfect.

My Uberti 1875 Remington clone is very near original .427. Very nice gun with tight chambers. Does not accept CBC brass, prefers Starline and 200gr cast bullets loaded to CAS velocity.

I have a box of factory Remington 200 grain jsps that are indicated to be .424. That would be minimum SAAMI spec. (.427- .003). What your gun is; who knows? I once measured a Colt that had .424 throats and a .427 barrel. My only 44-40 is a S&W 544 that has a .428 Barrel and .4285 throats.
