Ordered the wife a new one

Rifle that is. She has one deer rifle but thought it would be a good idea to have a spare, "just in case". We really can't interchange what long guns we shoot because she is right handed and I am left. Plus she is shorter and needs about 3/4 trimmed off the stock to fit her length of pull.
She liked the looks of the Winchester 70 featherweight compact so that is what was ordered. It has a 20 inch barrel and a 13 inch LOP. Was going to order it in .243 due to the lower recoil. But I asked her, do you want the rifle to recoil less or be a better deer killer? She said she wanted the better killer so decided on the 7mm/08. Since I reload can tailor her ammo to something that doesn't kick to much.

Excellent choice. I doubt there's a more balanced cartridge out there-and I don't even own one. Best, Thomas.

Hard to beat the 7-08 for women and young hunters. My wife has taken 10 Whitetails with her A-Bolt Micro, most with one shot.

Good choice of caliber - 243 is a quick killer, but only with correct shot placement - 7mm is more forgiving - my 7x57 seems to like Hornady 139 grn SP

I really like the 7mm-08. I have a Remington LSS mountain rifle and although I hunt only occasionally with it, I consider it my favorite. It just fits and is lightweight for a carry gun.

I thought long and hard about my last Ruger M77 I bought. I almost got a 7mm-08 but I already have a lot of .30 cal stuff and figured it was easier to stay with it so I got a .308. The 7mms hit pretty hard.

When I used a 28 calibre rifle for deer in the early 70s, I always found the Hornady 139 grain spitzer a quick killer of deer.

I plan on loading up something in the 140-150 grain range and keeping the velocity around 2,500-2,600 fps. We live and hunt in some thick timber so any shot will be relatively short and I don't want high velocity destroying a lot of tasty venison.

Picked up the rifle two days ago, very impressed! Ultra smooth bolt, crisp trigger, maybe 3.5 - 4 pounds. Fit and finish is excellent. Fits the wife perfectly. Most likely will not mount a scope and test fire until September but its a keeper.
