View Full Version : Can you identify these magazines?

While going through my Father in laws things after he passed we found these two magazines hidden in some old bowling shoes. Strange thing is he never possessed a semi auto handgun other than a Nambu he brought back from WW2. They appear to be 9mm and blued steel but other than that I am drawing blanks. Any ideas?

Look like beretta 92's at quick glance, but I haven't had one in a couple years to compare. Browning highpower maybe. Mec-gar made beretta's mags. m9's generally said us gov or a nsn number. Any markings?

Not a mark on them surprisingly. I've wondered if my Brother in laws got a hold of something and he put them away for safekeeping. But knowing my shiftless brothers in law it would have been a cheap Taurus rather than a Beretta.

There is no magazine catch hole in the front of either mag where the hole would have to be for the mags to be for either a Beretta 92fs or a Taurus pt92.
Other than that, the construction is very similar to that of a model 92 mag.

I don't remember any mag with the witness holes located where those are, but they do look a lot like Beretta or Taurus mags. Maybe SIG 226?

Seems to me the Beretta and Taurus clone had heel type mag catches prior to entering the US Army trials. I don't remember if the 226 was ever that way or not.

Camp 9 maybe had the same oval indent on the bottom

I agree with the others. Looks like beretta 92 mags to me

My guess it's a Ruger P-85/89 or something in that ballpark. Maybe an aftermarket part.

How many do you fit in? 9mm? .40? Is the follower plastic or steel?

Look like after market P89 mags

Follower is plastic and appears to be sized for 40 cal, one slipped right in like it was made for it.

Tazman nailed it.

Looksee. No mag catch slot :)

That means the pistol had a mag catch on the heal (bottom of the grip frame).
I know the real early Beretta 92 had a heal mag catch. Some time before 1985, probably way before.
Also maybe for the Beretta 84, kind of like a 380 version of the 92. Early versions had a heal mag catch.

So there is not a mag catch hole even on the front of the mag body, as for a Ruger?

Which of those early modes were for 40cal though?

Looks like there is a notch in the front per the photo in the OP, about 2/3 of the way to top. I think it's for a Ruger. The P91 is a 40 cal version of the P89

The magazines I have for my Beretta 92FS will hold 40S&W as if they were made to. You really can't use them in a Beretta 100 though because the feed timing is a little different. They will work somewhat but are unreliable in that useage. Lots of failures to feed.

Solderboy---I think you may be right about the hole in the front of that magazine. I didn't notice that. I thought it was a reflection.

With a little dremel work u can enlarge the mag catch of the beretta and will work perfectly in taurus.

Back on topic,
lets see a pic of the front of the mag.

Really cant tell from the original pic if there is a mag catch hole in the front of the mag.

That is where the hole is on my P89 mag.

That looks like a Ruger P series aftermarket or early factory mag.
