View Full Version : 16 ga slug data

I want to try loading slugs in my 16 ga 11-'48. I have the Lyman 16 ga Foster slug mould as well as a .662 round ball.

My Lyman shotshell manual does not show any data for slugs in the 16, but it does have some loads for buckshot. I know I can just substitute a slug in a buckshot load, but on a hunch I compared some loads in 12 ga. Buckshot and slug loads which were otherwise identical varied significantly in powder charge with slugs having much larger charges.

So, I've been thinking that I can use the buckshot loads as "start" loads and work up until the action cycles and I have decent accuracy. Any other considerations I need to look at?

I've done some looking, but haven't found much info for slugs in the 16. I was wondering if there are any good manuals with 16 ga slug loads? I am aware of the BPI manuals, but from what I understand all of the loads are for the slugs they sell, so I was under the impression that it would not be very helpful for what I want to do.

Thanks, victorfox. I don't have those powders on hand, but at least it's a data point I can compare to the buckshot data I have.

So, question, if I have powders of similar speed, can I start at buckshot charges and work up to nearly the same velocity as the pictured data? As I typed that last sentence, my first thought was "probably not that simple".

SR4756 and SR7625 are no longer being produced and haven't been for a couple years now . That's not to say there aren't other powders that are virtually the same thing or so I've been told . I just don't know which ones they are .

If I'm not mistaken the new W572 is supposed to be the same as SR4756 but in a ball powder .

I've been using SR7625 for 10 , 12 , 16 , 20 and 28 gauge stuff . I also have loads for the same gauges where I can use Universal Clays . I've decided all my remaining SR7625 will be used in the Short 10 gauge and the others are slowly all being changed over to Universal Clays .

I've had decent luck with low pressure 1100 FPS 16 gauge loads shooting birdshot and buckshot using Unique . I would think you could probably find a charge of Green Dot that would work equally well . And some others I know have suggested Blue Dot and or Herco .

I intend eventually to get some W572 and Blue Dot as I've not used either before .
