As many of you know, RCBS(no doubt now run by geniuses) has discontinued the 502, 505, and 10-10 scales. While that in itself, is a boneheaded thing to do, it has benefited us in a minor way. The 502 is on sale at Midway, I know I know, anyway it's $29.95 right now. If you know a beginner looking for a good scale, that will work, and it's a great price.

The late Chinese made RCBS scales had QC issues, why they got a bad name and likely why they are so cheap.

I would much rather have one of the older Ohaus made RCBS scales.

When did they change from the Ohaus made scales?

For the last few years (3-4?) the RCBS 502,505 and 10/10, also the Dillon Eliminator scales have been made in either China or Mexico. Unfortunately many people have been misled, thinking they have a US manufactured scale, because even the China/Mexico scales have "Manufactured by Ohaus" cast into the base. Some have a small paper label saying "made in China" stuck in the base.

All the RCBS scales say where they were actually made printed on the cardboard box.

Around a year or so ago RCBS dropped the 502,505, and 10/10 from their range and introduced two new beam scales, the M500 and the M1000. Both made in China (I've not come across one made in Mexico yet but maybe they do)

The M500 is a simple two poise scale, a direct replacement for the 502. The M1000 is the offering in place of the 10/10. I don't know if Ohaus is involved with the M500 and M1000 - There is nothing on the scale or on the box to indicate it is.

I picked up a 10-10 on clearance from academy sports for $75 a few months ago. Mine is accurate to a tenth which is fine for me. Scott Parker, who can tune the older 10-10's down to measure a grain of varget stated that the newer models cant be modified for that level of precision. FWIW RCBS markets these as being accurate to a .1 grains and both of my late model 10-10 and 505 can achieve that easily. I don't see what the issue is. These scales are being discounted to clear out inventory for their new line of scales.

Not sure if you have seen what 1066 can do to a scale or not but wish he lived close to me as I would be sending all my beam scales to him to tune.
