Just traded into a 336 in 35 Rem. Now what to do with it. It's an older model that someone drilled and tapped for scope. Has the short mag. Rifling looks good.

If it's a waffle-top, it sure sounds like you have an early 1950's M-336SC (Sporting Carbine) that should have a 20" barrel, like the 336RC (Regular Carbine).

I had a later one (from the early 60's), that I "loaned" ;) to a very close friend, who's been taking deer steadily with it, over the past 30-odd years. :bigsmyl2:

I suppose, if you don't really want it, it could be either sold on, or re-barreled to something different, like the .25-35 (Winchester or Francis Sell's "Tomcat").

If you have RD's 359-190 or the RCBS 35-200 mould (or NOE's clone) all you'll need is some brass and a medium speed powder. I suspect the 35-200 will work better but will send samples if you'll PM.

RCBS 35-200 or one of it's clones. You can spend time w/ other bullets. But you will end up at the 35-200 at some point. Might as well just start there.

Easy fix, looks like my brother wants it. Saves me from having to buy bullet mold and dies. Need to concentrate on other rifles that have not been shot yet like the 1886 that I just finished in 40-65.

If you ever took it hunting, you'd be hooked! I feel it's the best medicine for whitetails. And just what in the world is the "Tomcat"?

The .25-35 Tomcat is a wildcat cartridge that's a mild improvement on the .25-35 Winchester, created/developed by a fairly famous early gun writer(books & magazine articles), and a more famous early gunsmith - Francis Sell (the writer) & P.O.Ackley (the gunsmith).

Sell advocated for the cartridge in an excellent Gun Digest article (1948 ?) he wrote, "Rifle for a Woods-Loafer".

P.O. Ackley developed a more powerful wildcat, the .25-35AI (Ackley Improved).

All this was before there was such a cartridge like the .243; and also during the time the .257 Roberts was still a wildcat (later commercialized by Remington first, IIRC).

The .25 caliber commercial rifle cartridges at the time were the .25-20/.25WCF, the .250-3000/.250 Savage, and the .25-35 Winchester, and since some folks weren't satisfied with the power of the factory offerings, they made their own.

Thankfully you avoided that peice of junk. You do not want one of those, I know because I bought one once, then another, then another...well I have four now. Trust me you don't want one, err only one.

Thanks for the info on the tomcat, I have a 336 that need a rebarrel, and I'm leaning towards the 7-30 caliber. That way I can use a 7mm boolit with a flat nose.

There's a GD article (1982 issue) that has some pics of Sell & his Marlin/Tomcat.

Yes, they are like Lays potato chips. I'm working up to a full bag myself.

I have the same situation. I just picked up a 1950 336 SC waffle top in 35 Rem. and have no use for it.
I have a 336-44 mag barrel and considered swapping the barrels but found it is not that easy to change calibers on the 336.
It does have a much classier look and feel to it than newer Marlin leverguns.
I normally have die sets for all my CF guns but think I will just wait on this one until I find some reasonably priced ammo or develope some love for the 35 Rem. before I trade it or try to change its caliber.
I have thought of, 25-35, 250 Savage, 7x30 Waters, 300 Savage, 356 / 358 Win. but need to finish other projects first.

Hmm, wildcat stew.
Can a .35 Remington be necked out to head space on the case mouth?
Would such a thingamabob cycle through the action?

Jedman when you are thinking about letting that go PLEASE let me have a shot at it. I have a set of the 336A's 30-30, 32ws, 35 rem and need a 336 SC waffletop to finish another set. Thanks Tom
