I began experimenting with Krag loads in my #3 Ruger last summer and they are still ongoing. Best loads to date are with the Lee 180 grain cast of acww, sized to .311 and lubed with alox. With that load Varget is the powder to beat although IMR 3031 comes close. No filler is required with these powders. This rifle is my best cast shooter by far although my 250 Savage may just edge it out. Neil

runfiverun,

I'm shooting 30-40 in an 1896 Krag rifle. Is your 1895 Winchester an original? Not sure what the throat of yours would be but 30-40 normally prefers long heavy bullets. I have shot the Lyman 311291 at about 175 grs in the Krag with good accuracy.

For the Krag I like the heavier bullets and slower powders, I've used 4831 and 4350 in the past but currently I'm having very good luck with just less than a full case of WC-860 or 872. My favorite bullet is the Lyman 311284 at 220 grain with oven tempered WW. Velocities are at 1950 fps.

Have Fun,

JCherry

the 95 is original and actualy has a prtty good throat the 165's will easily engrave the rifling.
i am sizing them at 310, as 312 wont feed into the necks and release from the case.
311 gives me a very tight .001 open on the neck when fired.

i tried some h-322 here but it was sleeting and couldn't chrono them.
still had a respectable 1 1/2" group at 50 [5 shots] this rifle will do 3" 100 yd groups with flgc's

and i just need 1900-1950 for my sights
will probably end up with tang sigt when said and done to get to 220 yds.
