I hope you guys can give me some guidance on picking out a good bolt action mil-surp rifle. I am trying to decide between an M-44 Mosin Nagant , a Mauser Yugo M-24/47 or a Swiss K-31. Do any of you guys have any experience good or bad with these?? Any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

My experience with all the Moisins is that some shoot well, others do not.

My experience with the Swiss rifles is that all of them shoot well, some shoot really well. Tollerances are also held very tightly on the Swiss rifles.

Riverrat,
That's kind of like asking which is better, blonde or brunette. They are all good, it's just which one winds your clock. MN's are more crudely made, but have a charm all their own. Clever, simple, and functional are admirable qualities. Anything from the mind of Mauser is pure genius for the bolt gun fancier. The K-31 is one of the finest shooters I've ever tried. If you have a choice, look to the condition of each and pick the nicest one. Better yet, grab all three and know you have a selection of three great battle rifles.

I have all three of these and they are all good shooters. However, Nagants are very available and will continue to be. Yougos are also fairly avialable but the supply of K31s is much more limited. Get that one first. You will have an excellent shooter, wonderful craftsmenship and one of the slikest loading rifles available. Follow it with the Mauser and then add the Nagant later. Thats my advice for what its worth.

Can't go wrong with a K-31. I've seen some with pretty ugly stocks but never one that wouldn't shoot well. (Earlier this week took mine to the range and, using sling, achieved consistent 2 1/2" 100-yd groups from prone...and that was with CBs and military iron sights!)

On the other hand, though, you might also wish to consider a Lee-Enfield #3 or #4. Perhaps not as slick looking as a K-31 or a Mauser but truly an equally classic military weapon.

Thanks for all of the advice everyone. I have decided to go for the K-31 first and pick up the other two later when funds allow. I like the idea of an accurate rifle with a good trigger.

I shoot cast in all but one of my pistols and rifles, the only one I don't is my Springfield M1A civilian version of the M14 rifle.

With that said, the main thing you need to do is please yourself.

The Mosin-Nagant is inexpensive and plain looking, but also one of the strongest actions ever built. One guy here tried to blow one up with pistol powder and couldn't. Bent the heck out of things but it stayed in one piece. The Finnish rebuilt Mosins are usually accurate beyond belief.

The Yugo is a good example of a K98 Mauser variant, I have two. Mine are also inch at 100 yards accurate.

The K31 is fine workmanship, real eye candy. Get one while you still can.

You will most likely get excellent results with any of those!
