Has anyone bought some 4895 from Bartlett recently? How well does it work in the medium bores with mid-weight boolits? I'm thinking about stocking up for my .35's but at 100 bucks per jug I may just go with a canistered powder from Powder Valley.

I've used it in just about everything I own. Standard loads apply. Works as well as any commercial I've bought.

For my money, the small difference in price warrants the canister powder. Get used to it, the salad days of cheap surplus 4895 powder are all but gone. I remember 4895 at around $50-$55 for an 8 pounder, and it crept up from there. Some of the older guys at the range ( 70's+) tell me about sub $2 a pound 4895. Geez, who'da thought it would end??
When my supply is gone it will be canister powder.

Jeff's 4895 is not pulldown, he just bought a huge amount and broke it down himself to put into 8 pound containers. Since its not cannister powder, its not the exact burn rate of 4895, this stuff is much closer to 4064. I called and talked to him for quite a while before I bought a case of it. I paid $99 a jug, and buying a case I got free Hazmat, my final price with shipping came to $105 per 8 pound jug. There was no tax, so it was a lot cheaper than buying an eight powder at your local store.
It is very bulky powder, I can't get enough in a .308 Lapua case for my Palma rifle to get the velocety I need. For Palma you need to push a 155gr bullet at 2950, so it didn't work for me. Other competitions don't have to push the envelope that far, so it would be fine for most applications. I will use it for shorter distant loads, it should work real fine for 600 yard Midrange competion. I got some real low SDs and ESs with it, so its pretty good powder and a real good price.

I think it will work real well for the K31, and especially in the '06 for cast bullets, it will fill the case sort of like Trail Boss.

Any questions about it and how he aquired it, just call and ask him. He answered the phone himself when I called, which I thought was a good sign.

Ken O: Does it "look" like commercial (or the old surplus) IMR-4895 in color? In grain size? You said it's bulky...I view that as a VERY good thing for '06 case use. A powder that has a burn rate of IMR-4895 to IMR-4064 with the small grain (easy metering) size of IMR-4895 would be very good. You said he bought a "hugh amount" but didn't specifically say it was IMR-4895. I understand the meaning of "non canister" and what you have written, and am looking for clarification on it's physical charactoristics. [I guess I'm really thinking J-bullet varmint 243s and M2-cartridge for M1 Garand use]

artee, I took a paper plate and put down a scoop of this 4895, H4831, IMR 4064, and Vaget. I didn't have any H or IMR 4895 to compare it with. Jeff said he ordered this stuff from Russia

The color and size looks exactly like Varget. But... it is much bulkier. I took a Lee 3.1c scoop of each and weighed them. The Varget weighed 43.7, and the 4895 wieghed 39.7. Thats a big difference!

It seems the burn rate is about like IMR 4064 (just my opinion guys, start low work up) so I just took a '06 case and put 47 grs of this Russian 4895 in it, it came to about an 1/8" under the neck. Yep, I agree it should be just right for the cartriges you mentioned.

I bought 16# of that Bartlett powder this spring; it shoots great in my Garands with 152 gr fmj bullets; with LC cases, 49.5 grains gets me 2695 fps with a sd of 18, consistently, excellent functioning, and good accuracy. I think it is a great savings over canister powders.
