Just took delivery of a little Winchester 92 in 38/40. From what I have gathered so far, it was made 1908 and issued to my State prison guards in 1910!:p:p

External looks pretty ordinary but the action is tight and the bore near mint. Carried a lot, but not shot much.

FWIW, that "ladder" rear barrel sight (44-A ?) is the standard rear sight that Winchester installed on all Carbine model's prior to the 1920's, unless a different sight(s) were "Special Ordered".

There's something nice about those old Winchesters. Quite a collection you're getting there.

I'd love to start gathering old Winnies, but the prices on them make me gag.....

Keep looking. Some solid values out there and if you buy right they will only appreciate and provide high-quality entertainment while doing so.

I am curious to inquire what prices these little rifles fetch overseas, in Aus, I paid $AU700 for the full mag and $AU400 each for the carbines. The full mag versions are quite scarce but the 1/2 mags are plentifull.

Last year I bought a 92 44/40 1/2 mag made in 1896 that appears unfired, all original and not even a scratch on the cartridge lifter for $AU 500.

Another source is deceased estate guns, I bought this rebuilt 92 in 44 Special with full mag and 26" barrel that holds 14 for just $500. The action & lever have been professionally re-color case hardened.

I don't know why. but here in the states the half mag carbines are very scarce. the full mags are common. even in the rifles the half or shorter mags a scarce in all models.

things are flipped between here and there.
trying to even find a 38-40 is a task in itself, and an original 44-40?
you might as well go down to south America for one of those.
the 73 was the gun that won the west by default, most all the 92's were shipped out of country.
the 95 is the same way, more of them went to Russia [chambered in the 7.62X54R] than was sold in the US.

Thanks for that information, it is very interesting where all the rifles went across the world. The '73's fetch $AU2000 upwards, original Trapdoors $AU3000 and 95's I saw one about 5 years ago in 30/40 for $AU6000!

Very nice find, there's one in a pawnshop here in 32-20 octagon that there asking $4500 for, and they've had it for 15yrs that I know of, and it don't look like it'll sell anytime soon!

BAW, if the proposed changes to the NFA (National Firearms Agreement) end up virtually banning lever actions (unlikely, I think, but rumours persist) then I reckon we should point out the US prices on these, should make a nice killing on a buyback![smilie=l:

$2000 for an 1873? The Uberti replicas are pretty close to that!

I've always disliked the replicas of old models. I always took the money and went after a original
My buddies with their new shined up replicas made fun of my old Winchesters, Marlins, S&Ws
and Colts. They always said for the same money I could have a new gun, just like theirs. Look
who's crying now. I admit they are harder to find now, but they are still out there. And I ain't
talking "finding" a gun at a show. Nothing in a show is "lost". You have to beat the backwoods.
