In Cody for the Winchester Arms Collector's show, Sharps collectors here as well. Not looking to buy anything but I'd be open to bringing home an original Sharps 1874 if the situation presents itself. Anything to look for or stay away from?

On those original sharps rifles, avoiding the ones marked made in Bangladesh made be a good thing to do...

read a couple years ago about 40 sharps rifles from a collection from a famous writer that passed. many had been rebarreled back in the old days. i dont know if that is important to you as a collector but if it is, check out if the barrel is original.

I saw a few today, they were a bit more expensive than I was expecting. Maybe another time. I'm out of money, I'll spend a bit more time studying them tomorrow so I'll know what to expect.

Going price for a nice 1874 in 45-70 is about $7000. A Sharps collector's organization was at the show so there were several to look at but none were what I was looking for. Some, of course, were marked for much more but not many were for much less. 1885's were there as well but like the original Sharps were a bit rich for my blood.

You can spend a lot less money on an original .50-70 converted 1859 or 1863 carbine. There are quite a few out there compared to available 1874s. I paid $1,600.00 for my '63 with a pristeen
three groove bore. That would be one thing to look for if you go that route. Some carbines
were not relined and retain the original .52 cal. bore which is obviously oversize.

I saw a few of those, the dealer I bought my 1873 TD from has a few very nice 1863 Sharps rifles. I have a lot to learn about these old Sharps rifles, not something I'm going to rush into.
