I need some advice, I am vacationing in a small town out of state. A local shop has a Thompson Center inline 50 caliber muzzleloader. The outside appears well cared for, the bore has a white residue. I have looked at the bore and did not see any corrosion. Anything I need to be aware of. Thanks.

I'd ask the dealer if I could run a couple of cleaning patches through the bore to see what comes out. Might just be a preservative put in by the former owner. Frosted bores are more often found in heavily used center fire rifles that used corrosive ammunition. If the black powder rifle you're looking at would have been neglected the damage would be reddish rust. About the only way I can think of that a black powder rifle could have a frosted appearance would be if it had been heavily rusted and then an acid was used to remove the rust leaving just the surface damage in the bore.

Pyrodex, and several other synthetic black powder residues, pellets etc, can and do leave a white frosted reisdue, a couple of patches of any bore cleaner should remove it, if not, leave it alone!

and it would also pay to have a bore light to help illuminate the bore. remove the breech plug if possible.

Thanks all, I did look down the bore and the white residue appeared evenly distributed. I will consider all the information given.

Walk away. Sounds like neglect.

Pyrodex damage. May, or may not shoot well.

Another suffering from the heartbreak of pyrodex...
In '91 came back from a business trip and found that once upon a time.
Still kick myself in the pants for being hassled, harried and forgetful.

I bought a Renegade one time for parts. you could barely tell it was rifled. cleaned it good & the riflin' came back fair. wasn't a tack driver but shot plenty good enough for deer at any reasonable muzzleloader range.

I left it, I appreciate the responses. I was looking for a squirrel rifle, found a TC Seneca 36. I should have it first of next week.

Now that's a find and an excellent choice if the bore is good: Very accurate!

Lost interest at the word "inline". Most important thing, though is the price. If it can be had cheap enough, its always a bargain. Muzzle-loader market is pretty slow right now, so its possible to get a gun good enough for deer hunting for twenty-five bucks... but those generally do not have a T/C logo on them.

I've had some pretty ugly bores shoot fairly well and most of them will clean up with a little TLC and elbow grease.

Any TC inline, like new $50 bucks tops, Bore Questionable $25 buck or walk away you do not need that headache.

I would love to find just a barrel that cheap. I want to add a fast twist .50 to my underhammer for paperpatch trials. Bruce H
