In an antique shop I saw this ammo pouch in a glass case.

Inside were 20 .45-70 loaded rounds, stamped "10 87 F" on the head.
Not a bad price. I don't have a 45-70 (I do have a 50-70), but I couldn't leave them behind.

Those are the antique shops I love, the ones that sell stuff with character. I hate the antique shops that attempt to sell 70's or 80's **** that wouldn't even sell at a garage sale or auction. Good find!

This antique shop also has a Smith & Wesson Model 3 that I'm trying to research. They didn't have much info on it.
Yesterday, in a small, out of the way gunshop I found an original .351 Winchester Self Loader magazine and 8 "vintage" rounds for $65. I do have that rifle.

Nice find. Can't help but wonder about the story behind that piece of history. Pretty well preserved, all things considered.

The 10 is October and 87 is 1887. Very cool.

The date on the ammo puts it toward the end of the .45-70s usage. Probably stuffed away and forgotten.

Nice find! That McKeever cartridge box is in nice shape as well! I have had several of the McKeever cartridge boxes over the years - still have two. One for the 45-70 but no cartridges. The other McKeever that I have is for the 30-40 Krag and thanks to a fine member on this site, I was able to fill ten of the loops of that one with original 30-40 military issue rounds.

Very nice find - thanks for sharing! A nice Indian Wars period piece!

On the leather latch is stamped "Watervliet Arsenal". Inside the pouch is stamped "LV ars". I'm trying to find out what arsenal "LV" might be. The closest match that I found is Leavenworth Arsenal, but that closed in 1872.

I have several 45-70 rounds marked 4-92-F. My nephew was working at an in door range when someone brought them in for disposal and he brought them to me to dispose of, which of course I did. What!!! You don't believe me. I am shocked, shocked I tell you.

No "C" in the headstamp would indicate rifle rather than carbine loads, i.e. 500 grain rather than the 405 grain bullet. I have one inside primed carbine load dated 1878 also from Frankford Arsenal.

The cases I have are copper. According to Guy Hildebrand at this site http://www.oldammo.com/index.htm, they switched to tinned brass in 1888. I might pull one apart just to see what the black powder looks like and weigh the bullet.

All cleaned up and ready for a night out. I don't like to clean away history but corrosion has to go (look at the Before pics). Copper is really a pretty metal. I've been working the leather with a restoration oil.
The LV stamped inside is most likely an inspector's mark.
