I need to make a ram for one of these. Could someone provide overall length and linkage area dimensions. I plan on machining it for standard shell holders.

The following are only by me using a tape measure while the ram is still inside the Super O Maximum press. Too much trouble to disassemble the unit.

Length is approx 7-1/8" long, round ram shaft is approx. 1-1/2" diameter.

Hope that helps.

I recomend you making a normal industry shell holder that has a ring coller on the base of it, then you could size that ring to fit inside the present Herter's type hole head that accepts the Herters shell holders.

I did this on my Lee press, it can use industry standard SH, or the Herter's SH that I use to put nose punches through the SH primer hole and secured with a nut.

The below picture is standard SH mounted on smaller base ring...tack welded on, and it rest in the flat bar...or can be made to rest in the Herter's ram as well.

Damn - I lost my ball :-) -- dropped detent ball removing the ram -- My super model 3 ram is 1.180 dia and 6 3/8" o.l. - Pin is nominal 3/8"dia. pin is located 5 7/8 from top.
Detent ring - to hold ram up, which it does not do well is .200 wide by .175 deep. there is a small longitudinal groove fromdetent groove down ram to about 4 1/2" from top.
there is also a 45 degree bevel at bottom about 1/2" for arm clearance. .
Not sure what you mean by linkage area, but link is nominal 3/8"thk by 5/8" wide with 2 1/16 between pin centers. Hope this is of some help.

Oh - oh, I see we have two different presses in mind. Mine is a plain C press, but it is marked Super model 3

Pavogrande, I believe that your press is the same as the one I have, as it is also a C type frame with the same markings & ram Diameter.

For what it's worth, I made an adapter for mine. It wasn't too difficult, but the first attempt did fail under stress. The second attempt took that failure into account and I left a lot more steel in the weak spots.

Here are some pictures, hopefully it inspires someone else to do the same thing.

BSB, does your adapter effect ram travel? All the commercially available ones shorten ram travel so that the press does not cam over and is difficult to use for full length sizing. The origianl Herter's adapter is thinner and does not do this.
To make an adapter work with full ram travel the ram needs to be shortened to just above the screw holes, seriously weaking the grip on the shellholder.

I have the Herter's adapter and can get pictures and measurements later this week.

Pressman, no, I have full travel. There is about 3/8" difference, but letting out the die the same amount accommodates the slight change.

In retrospect, it would be much better to make an adapter that slides down into the ram, letting the universal adapter rest flush with the top of the ram. It would negate the quick-change aspect of it, which my current model retains, but it would have the zero-travel-gain affect that you refer to.

Also, because of the kludgey nature of my adapter, I cannot use it to seat primers, and I don't like the stress of resizing, so I really only use my Herter's in limited capacities - necking, charging with powder, seating and crimping.

I bought an adaptor for my Dads Herter press I believe it was from a company C-H

Here are four Herter's adapters I have.
1; CH4D type
2; Herter's
3; Unknown
4; Homemade

Only the Herter's sets the shellholder into the ram so there is no ram travel issues. It seems to be hard and strong enough for full length resizing.

I can provide more details and measurments through email: herters@netins.net

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!
