The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”Jeremiah 17:9-10 NLT (https://www.biblegateway.com/button/votd/bcv)

Amen to all the above. Becoming a Christian doesn't automatically make us impervious to the influences of this world and our own wills. God knows, ultimately, our motivations. It's a simple illustration of what the story of the widow and her two mites, and the rich man's flowery prayer, clearly illustrate. And He DOES care about WHY we do what we do. Introspective isn't always pleasant, but it's always necessary for such a willful lot as we humans are. Only that can reveal our true motives for what we do. And it's humbling to take a look inside our own selves, honestly. This is why I've long thought humility is the greatest hallmark of a true Christian.
