It is an HVA 456 in .30'06 and I'm loading LBT's 310165 LFN for hunting. 26 grains of Rx7 is giving 1825 fps for my AC/WW bullet, which I think will be fine for my use as my max range is about 60 yards where I hunt. I've ran 65 rounds through it and the bore is as clean as a hound's tooth. Can't wait for the season to open! Here she is:

That's a real looker. Wish my HVA looked that good, but then it's just a JC Higgins 51L in 308. Tried some 311041 sized .3095 over 4895 one time on the spur of the moment, it didn't do too well. Need to slug the bore and get more serious with it.

Nice rifle. Sitting on a deer stand is always better when you're holding a nice rifle.

Mamma tol' me not to mess with any ugly rifles or women. That one is a classic looker. Mamma would be proud if that was mine.

Absolutely!! The beauty of blued steel and walnut is simply not appreciated by the younger generation. Like Thumbcocker I'm a real sucker for Mannlicher style stocks also.

Thanks fellows. I looked quite a while for this particular rendition as the full stocks are not nearly as plenteous as the half stock models. As is obvious, this is my now favorite and I'm going to try and wear it out shooting cast through it.

Beautiful rifle, I use a very similar boolit , same weight, with 24 gr of re7 or either 4227 in my 308, same speed. this combo did a DRT on a nice 5 point at 125 yards last fall. please don't underestimate the the load you have. I can hammer my 6" , 200 yard gouge, all day long by simply centering it between the bottom post and cross hair of my 2x7 leopold on 7x. I personally would not hesitate at 200 yards on a standing target, standing target, with your load.

When I decided to try cast in it, I naturally went to the RCBS 30-180 FN as I really like to work with that bullet for hunting purposes. No go! When seated to the crimp groove, it would catch on the top of the chamber and not feed. Tried Lyman's 31141....same results. Lyman's 311291 and all the RN I've tried will feed fine but, I like a FN for hunting.
The LBT being a one diameter design had to be seated deep (OAL 2.980") and has to be crimped because the check is just past the neck and will telescope but, it feeds fine and gives good results.
I've found the 311407 will feed but, the GC is down past the shoulder never the less, I'll give it a try whenever I exhaust...if ever... the LBT design.

Ken, What bullet are you using? I'm sure my load has what it takes for a clean harvest. Way back last century (1976) was my first effort to use cast for hunting. Was using a .300 Savage loaded with 311466 and enough 4227 for 1725 fps and killed 2 that year, one at about 30 yards, the other 200 yards. Hey, I was just starting with cast and no one ever told me it would be foolish to try at that range. Anyway, that little 156 grain RN boolit filled my freezer and I'll bet it would still work but, I'm not as foolish now.....maybe.:bigsmyl2:

JDL, that is a classic beauty right there!

As soon as I saw it, it reminded me of my mis-spent youth back in the late 50s and early 60s. I "wasted" many, many hours thumbing lustfully through the latest Shooter's Bible or Gun Digest, drooling over those Mannlicher type rifles!

The next time I see that rifle, I want it to be safely leaning against a boolit killed buck, OK? :-)

I will endeavor to do my best Treetop! I too remember the old catalogs, especially the Shooter's Bible my dad had. It must have been a '50's something.
We had a TV program back in the dark ages called "Rama of the Jungle". IIRC, it was about a doctor in Africa but, I don't remember much else except he carried a Mannlicher Carbine. Loved them ever since.

JDL, I have 3 that perform almost identically in my rifle with same charge of powder, LEE 309 170 gr FN, Ohaus 309180 RN, and NOE 311155 RFN. The NOE 311165 RD clone also shots well. My rifle has a 7.62 chamber and I can seat any of these boolitz to base of neck without interference. All sized and checked in a .312 die.

I have one of those with a lot of memories. My Dad bought it and fitted it with a Weaver 3x9 sometime in the late 50s or early 60s. He used it for hunting, and when he lost interest in that, my grandfather took it and used it for several years. He loved it except for the recoil with factory loads, especially 180 grain or heavier. In one of our family's favorite pictures of him, he is wearing his old Woolrich red/black hunting coat, pants, and hat and holding the Husky. I am just starting to work with it and cast boolits, so I will be watching this thread closely. Good luck on the hunt, JDL.

JDL, awesome rifle. Everything looks right on that one. I try get that sweep in front of mag to barrel tip and don't get it right often but yours is right. If you could would you enlighten me on the addition of fore end. Looks like a joint. Quite a few older mausers from the old country are jointed there also. Can you see in the barrel channel any metal in joint?

Is there anyone else here that is aware that the Hushies in 06 are of the IMHO proper twist of 1x12 ? Yes your Huskies should love cast boolitz just as the 30/30s do because the Huskies were made IMHO opinion with the correct twist for the 06. :-)
