HI
I posted about this in the" hunting with CB" section but no replies so try here!

for my BOLT ACTION subsonic (950fps) 308 rifle:

looking for a SUPPLIER of soft cast lead HP bullets in the 130 to 190gr that WILL expand at subsonic velocities on coyotes. since this is not in an AR I do not need as heavy of bullets.
any ideas and or experiences with this and supplier info.
I do not want to cast my own.

You will probably have to go to a custom bullet caster to get soft bullets for your 308 Winchester rifle. You might try some of the vendor members here.

Are you just trying to dispatch Coyotes?

I don't think expansion on varmint is that big of deal.

IMHO, You're better off with a higher grain bullet carrying more energy. If you hit vitals it'll drop.

I have used the MP molds 311410 with deep hollow point pins (~128 grain) and the MP 165 grain hunting mold with large hollow points at subsonic velocities as well as the NOE 311-247 (whisper/blackout bullet). All three will open up on deer/hogs very well when cast with 50% pure lead and 50% wheelweights. I think the 311410 may open up the best as it tapers to a thin cavity at the nose. I have recovered 311410 bullets from wet pack that were completely mushroomed back to the base of the hollow point cavity.

Even with expansion, you will not get bang/flop results unless the CNS is hit. A coyote can and will run a long way with an expanded subsonic bullet through the vitals..

Sorry I do not have any leads on soft cast boolits for you.

Canadian shooters can get most any bullet, in any alloy from M.T. Chambers supply, including HP designs.

Thanks gang
any other info / experience on this out there???

also - if i use a soft cast HP bullet that is a gas check design BUT WITHOUT the gas check and use a bake on coating will that work well for subsonic/950fps use?

if your gonna shoot slow just get a plain base design.
or put the gas check on.
shooting a check mold without it can be done, but the results are not as predictable so you get what you get.

I dunno if you know this or not.
but just adding P/C is not a magic cure all, there are still fitment issues to be dealt with for it to work properly.

Since you are shooting subsonic I guess you are using a suppressor? If so you may not wan to use a gas checked bullet as it is just one more thing that may cause a baffle strike if it comes loose.

We make jacketed bullets for sub-sonic hunting. 220g SP .30 cal they work wonderfully. Cost is 75.00 per 100. Most sup. makers do not warranty lead shooting unless it is a can you can disassemble and clean. That was the cause for us to begin making these bullets.

Thanks again for the info
the reason behind the lead bullets was to bring shooting cost down and a lot of people claim that the cast lead boolits work just as well or better in subsonic applications (non suppressor)

I agree. Cast works as well with more nose shapes available and the ability to tailor the alloy for your impact speed/distance.
