I have a 10/22 in 22lr and want to turn it into a lightweight tack driver any suggestions??

I want total gun to be less weight than standard 10/22. So I was thinking of a Hogue, a Boyd's type stock or other type of lightweight custom stock, lightweight barrel, maybe muzzle break, redo action in volquartsen or some other brand internals plus scope maybe red dot.

Since i have gun already I would like to stay under $1000 plus whatever optics cost.

Can you offer some suggestions on places to get parts or ideas. Also if you have built one can you show a picture. I'm building it to have fun with, this will be my first 10/22 build. If you have other ideas of what parts to use I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance

Typically "tack drivers" arnt light... based on your criteria I'd spend a majority of my money on a trigger. The hogue stock is heavier than the factory and the boyds will be heavier or similar weight unless you get one of the skeletonized stocks sounds like a carbon fiber barrel is what your looking for. Gold luck.

Do you have an idea which direction you want to go?

.

IMO, it's an unreasonable expectation to get an accurate 10/22 that's lighter than an issue 10/22 - but you might be able to come close.

When the 10/22 was first introduced, I was able to make a very accurate standard walnut carbine via dis-assembling the trigger parts & polishing the pertinent parts for a great clean/crisp trigger pull - but the same cannot be done on 10/22's made after Ruger changed the material the trigger parts are made of (IDK the year/SN of the change).

There's not many stocks that are lighter than an issue Ruger synthetic canoe paddle, which I'd adapt (inlet/bed) to accept a Volquartsen Carbon Fiber Ultralite Barrel, then also install a Volquartsen trigger group - which should leave plenty of cash for optics.

FWIW - the Rimfire Central forum ( www.rimfirecentral.com (http://www.rimfirecentral.com) ) has an entire section dedicated to Ruger 10/22's, broken down to barrels, stocks, actions, & modifications, so you won't have to re-invent the wheel.

Also look at Tactical Solutions barrels
Steel liner in a Aluminum tube ..can get threaded version as well (for a suppressor later on)
very very accurate barrel and extremely lite

How light are you talking about? The biggest wt. reduction would be to go with one of the carbon fiber wrapped barrels, and don't listen to people who say a light gun won't shoot. They ARE harder to shoot, especially when shooting unsupported, but they CAN be VERY accurate! I've seen too many to enumerate. Those carbon fiber barrels have been amazingly accurate. Never had one myself, but a buddy did, and he and some friends had a regular Saturday afternoon grudge match and BBQ, and his 10/22 was shooting with and often winning against Anschuts and other tartet jobs of much greater wt. and length. As with all rifles, it's all in how they're put together and in the details (crown, fitting, etc.). But light barrels CAN be accurate, and don't let anyone tell you they can't, especially in .22 LR/mag. and the like. Big boomers in the centerfires heat up much more quickly, and this turns any imperfection in their metalurgy or coutouring into a factor that quickly shows up. With .22's, this isn't a problem.

But you CAN get them so light they become too fragile, as one above noted, and they CAN be harder for the shooter to hold without moving before the trigger breaks. A solid hold, though, can overcome this. They're just more susceptible, because of the physics of it, to move just before that trigger breaks, but their intrinsic accuracy can be as good as any barrel made.

Jim,
Understand that you have a 10/22 donor but all you will have left is the Ruger's aluminum action, made for a slide in barrel and frankly it is not much, compared to a MOA stainless action made for a screw in barrel. The MOA action comes without assignment as a rifle or pistol so can be made into a super accurate semi auto handgun or a rifle. I have shot against them in matches and they give up nothing to a custom bolt gun, even as a handgun. Then if you want to do a SBR Form-1 filing you can put a 10-12 inch barrel in a rifle stock with a can.

Barrel and Stock, the rest is fluff. If you can get it to about 3.5lbs I think you be where you need to be.

I've put a birch stock on my 1022 ,cut barrel band bit off, cut down the pistol grip a bit it is actually lighter than the plastic stock( not the paddle type) power custom hammer and a few other mods shoots half inch groups at 25yards if I'm on form with SK magazine ammo.great fun gun.

Artful all those options look nice. Now you have me wanting to build more than 1!

I want a lightweight gun, lighter than a standard 10/22 obviously minus optics. However I want it to be accurate enough to shoot quarter groups as long as shooter can do it. It's more of a extra "toy" not doing any competition with it. Still around $1000 without price of optics. Which included:stock, barrel, action, internals
