I was at the recycler today looking for lead and looked into a brass bin to see a whole bunch of 40 S&W and 223 brass. That is not odd in itself but the brass was nickel and had a purple tint or wash on it. I thought it may be steel but it is non-magnetic and was in the brass bin.

It is boxer primed, but the primers on the 223 are crimped.

Head stamp on the 40 S&W is WMA 15 and in addition to the "223 REM" markings, the later has "WIN 16".

What is this stuff? I am assuming from the amount of it, it must be Law Enforcement that is generating it.

Inquiring minds want to know...

the purple is from heat.
same thing chrome nickel headers do after a few heat cycles.

They tint it purple and sell it as training ammunition

This is the answer. That is the same purple wash that I saw in the bin. Thank you for the insight. Tim

holy cow.
I better not let little girl see that or she might change her mind about the 40 short.

Cool. Thanks, Bonz. I'd never seen the stuff before.
