Have an opportunity coming up next season and if it pans out, I want to be prepared.
What would be a good cast recipe for furbearers (Coyote, wolf etc.) specifically in a reduced load 30 cal?
Looking for a boolit with good performance to ~200 yards or so and won't tear up the pelt on exit... and reduced loads because I just don't see the need for a full power 30-06 vs. most critters out there, with proper shot placement.
My 3 options for rifles are my m77 30-06, Savage 340 30-30 and a 303 Brit Sporter. I don't (and won't) own anything smaller, not counting my old Marlin single shot 22...
Being new to cast, what is the formula for not tearing up your quarry too much, as far as weight vs. shape vs. velocity, etc? Or is there such a formula...

CCI 200 + 27.8 grns. (LEE 1.90 cc dipper) IMR4198 + LEE C312-185-1R = .303 Brit/.30-06 Kiyoot load.
CCI 200 + 18.0 grns (.40 S&W caseful) IMR4227 + LEE C309-113F = .30-30 load.

Hard water-dropped boolits may be tumble-lubed OR PC'd. I have two LEE C309-113F molds: one I drilled out to a PB with a 5/16" drill. It doesn't seem to matter to the varmints which one hits them from that load.

YMMV. I take no responsibility for how YOU reload ammo.

I think the 06 /or savage 30-30 works and in my Mod 10 savage 308 I shoot NOE 310 /165 grain FN(30xCB) BHN 17/18 as you do not want expansion just the hole(in the right place).Varget and 4064 work for me .

I guess the key is the right combination of a harder boolit and the powder load that keeps it stable and accurate to the target, with enough speed and weight to kill what I'm hitting. Sounds pretty straight forward...
Like I said before, I'm new to cast, and to reloading in general... so this seems like a great place to start learning how to develop loads.
Thanks for the input. That gives me a couple ideas to play around with.
The 06 and 303 are both 1:10 twist (17" and 22" respectively,) but I can't remember what the twist on the 340's 20" barrel is. I want to say 1:12 but I'd probably be lying. One way to find out for sure...
How that all pertains to the subject at hand, well, I'll figure it out as I go, I guess.
Now to find a quiet place to shoot. A lot.

it's probably a 12.
don't stop it from shooting just fine at 17-1800 fps.
it'll go faster of course and at 200 yds I'd want the extra speed.
anyway in the 30-30.
34-36grs of 4831 on top of a 170-200gr boolit of a decent balanced tin/antimony alloy should do just fine.
34 grs will give 1800 fps in a 20" barrel easy enough, and shoots fairly quietly at the muzzle.

I. Used li linotype slugs in my 30-06 for saving hides. A round nosed bullet seemed to pencil thru, and the critters would crawl a surprising distance with excellent hits.. Be prepared to do some tracking. Also be aware of nearby homes and live stock, those slugs do go a long way.

I've used a 150 gr. 311440 boolit with good effect. Both in the .30-30 & .30-06. I sized 'em to 310 and found an accurate load for my rifles. Unique in the .30-30 and 2400 in the .30-06. Made a perfect paper punch .30 cal hole in and out. Critters never went far. A spitzer will make a much smaller hole in as it flexes the tissue at entry. Exit for those depend on alloy, speed and design. If you can live with a perfectly round hole on either side, I wouldn't pass by the 311440.

I like the looks of the 311440. A perfectly round hole on either side is much preferred over shredded tatters on the exit side.
Lots of good info for starters.
I'm getting excited to get rolling on this.
Gonna be ready for next season... got caught with my pants down this past year with no ammo after the move down here... not going to let that happen again.

From an ex fur buyers perspective, with 20+ years experience, I commend you for starting early on to develop a lead cast load to harvest fur bearers. Looks like posts # 6 & 7 would be a good place to start, then refine to suit you and your rifle.

Have spent lots of hours sewing up BIG/LARGE bullet holes in hides. YMMV. Good luck.
