i guess it been like 3+ years ago i was looking for a new caliber that i could get for my encore. i had it narrowed down to three, a 338-08(338 fed), a 405 win and 444 marlin. the 405 win has been one of my favorites since i was 13 years old. old theo roosevelt bought me because of this caliber. i knew i should have bought the 405 win, but i instead bought the 444 marlin. now don't get me wrong, i luv the triple 4. and since i "discovered" cast boolits, the 444 is greatly underappreciated for what it does. from mild to wild, the triple 4 does it all!

anyway, i didn't take the 405 win because of the lack of j-words. now, however(i'd wished i've known about cast http://images.proboards.com/f/smiley/undecided.png !!!), there is a 405 win that is availiable on the tc encore.( www.go2gbo.com/forums/encore-classifieds/encore-405-winchester-barrel-for-sale/ (http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/encore-classifieds/encore-405-winchester-barrel-for-sale/) ).

now here is the problem. i've been thinking of getting a 45 lc in a ruger blackhawk( www.lipseys.com/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=RUBN44 (http://www.lipseys.com/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=RUBN44) ) for some time now. i've started to save up for it(gun, brass, cast boolits, dies...) but i have a LONG way to go. which brings me up to problem #2...i don't have enough saved up to buy the 405 win, let alone the 45 colt. i know it will be next year for the 45, and it will be about 2 months for the 405 win. (doesn't gubbermint disability give me a preapproved loan or sumthin http://images.proboards.com/f/smiley/rofl.png !!!)

i know that i am letting the 405 go, i know also that i don't "need" another encore barrel (have 5 barrels and two encores). i don't "need" another 45 because as soon as it comes in, there will be a 44 mag ( www.lipseys.com/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=RUKS458N (http://www.lipseys.com/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=RUKS458N) ).

my rant is now done. the money for the 45 lc will stay. its just hard for me to let a 405 go... http://images.proboards.com/f/smiley/cry.pnghttp://images.proboards.com/f/smiley/cry.pnghttp://images.proboards.com/f/smiley/cry.png

tdoyka,

It is hard to give up on something that would scratch a certain itch. But when it comes to cast boolits I doubt that the 405 would do anything that your 444 won't do.

I didn't know it was possible not to need another T/C barrel.

you're probably right. i've shot 200-240gr xtp and 265gr hornady fn along with 230gr wc, 250gr mihek hp, 275gr ranch dog and 280gr wfn gc. i still have a long way to go until i reach the 425gr huckleberry.

a 405 would def scratch my itch, but it will stay unscratched until i buy a 405, sometime...
