I posted earlier in the month that I had purchased a 44 special Lipsey Black hawk Bisley.

Today was pick up day and for those who think I might brag some more about the Ruger you'll be disappointed.

This is about the Joke the gun shop I bought it from was during the whole buying process!

Now this applies more towards the gun owners still living in Los Angeles that haven't had the good sense or the means to escape, the rest of you can just consider yourselves lucky not to have this experience!

Day One: went into said shop and was told no such pistol was made and couldn't be ordered because it wasn't on the "approved" list.
Advised clerk that single action revolvers were exempt from said stupid list, he went and checked with a higher up.

Said higher up went to computer and told me it was only available from Lipsey's and they were out of stock. He did suggest I call them and get on a waiting list, smartest guy in the place and I never saw him again!

Called Lipsey's that afternoon left name and number, next morning I got a call from a nice gal at Lipsey's asking me how serious I was about the Bisley purchase?? Advised her I'd put money down ASAP if she could convince the dealer to talk to her.

She told me she'd call the dealer I had visited the day before and set them straight, call time was 9:30 AM.

Said shop opens at 10:00 AM and 32 minutes later I got a call from said gun shop asking me to please come down and put a deposit down on the Bisley.

Got to the place pulled a number and waited 2.5 hours to make a deposit and start paper work.

4 days later got call: Bisley was in come start paper work, went it pulled number and was there 4 hours, both waiting and doing paper work, Already had my gun safety card and had to explain to the third clerk "helping" how to get the cylinder out of the Bisley to remove a plastic disc behind the cylinder, then he told me I needed to "demonstrate" I knew how the gun worked to satisfy some BS requirement the gun shop owners claimed the DOJ forced them to ask for.

Pointed out to him that since I knew how to get the cylinder out of the gun and he didn't that should clearly show I knew what I was doing.....after a brief pause he agreed with me and we moved on to the rest of the paper work.

after this was done I was advised I could finish paying for the gun then or any time up to and including my pick up date but I needed to show second ID for pick up.

Here in California we now need a current CA driver license and matching "ID" which can be vehicle registration, phone bill, electric bill, gas bill etc. I was told JOD preferred "current" registration of my car or truck.

Two days later a late California Tax return arrived and I put some of it to use paying off the balance of the Bisley and, at the same time, I gave them a copy of my registration to put in the file. This only took me 30 minutes.

Pick up time was after 3:00 PM today, so I went in after work, arrived at 5:30 and pulled a number, again.

20 minute wait and we got started on the paper work, cleaning up "my" mistakes made during my Four hour tour earlier in the month??

This was clerk number 4 by the way, and he advised my place of birth was wrong?? previous Clerk said just the state initials would be OK, number four says I have to spell out city and state.

Correction made, now I need second ID do I have my registration???

Advised Number 4 that I had given that to them when I paid the balance due on the Bisley, took him 10 minutes to find it in the filing box.

The rest of the paper work continued with one or two other mistakes I had made at their direction, number 4 then had to take the paper work to his boss for a blessing and then I had to fill out another piece of paper stating I knew the basics of gun safety ( isn't that why I took a state mandated safety test to buy a hand gun in the first place?) It was obvious that the owners of said shop are afraid they will be sued and want to have all the signed documents they can get to save their own hides, LOL!

I checked off everything correctly and had the cashier stamp approval on my document, first one was upside down so I figure I'll be headed to Gitmo shortly, she corrected that and I was then escorted to the door and given my gun, time was 7:05 PM.

For those members residing in Southern California be aware this gun shop was The Turners Outdoorsman in West Covina Ca.
and I understand that this is the usual way they conduct business at all the Turners!

It will be a cold day before I put myself though that again and I suggest others think twice before spending money at Turners.

Mind you they were never unpleasant they just didn't seem to care.

I will be taking my money elsewhere in the future!

at least you got a local gun shop.
I gotta walk down to the Laundromat and tell Dave what I want and give him some money.
probably end up buying some fishing stuff while I'm there too.
then wait for the shipment from the warehouse.
the wife usually picks the gun up when it gets there.

It sux to be in Ca where they don't want you to own guns. Or at least in YOUR part of Ca. Glad you FINALLY got it.

runfiverun,,, I can understand your issue, as I've been to Soda Springs,,, visiting sixshot & callshot. I did enjoy my range time there last summer.

I miss the days when our local gun dealer would say, " Take it home with you, if you don't like it bring it back if you do like it it will be x number of dollars."

I don't like the paperwork at all...the whole procedure is bunk but for now it is what it is...we "tolerate it"..as to Turners I guess it's all about the store and the local management....I've probably transfered 20 guns over the past few years and maybe half at Turners Kearny Mesa in San Diego...other than one day when they were swamped during the last AR "panic" I've had really good luck..they have a woman that is one of the managers and she is really on the ball and keeps things moving..

I'm not a Turners "fan" in most product areas as I have a Son that is in the fishing tackle business and a direct competitor of Turners but where they have done well I think it's fair to say so...never dealt with others besides this store so don't know.....I've not waited more than maybe a half hour to be helped and the folks I dealt with were aware of the "rules"...from what your post says you wasted maybe 8-9 total hours..I hope you contacted their home office management and let them know...one more thing..the store on Kearny mesa has a sign that says "no transfers after 4:30 pm"...maybe you missed the sign and getting there at 5:30 might have had some bearing...

The problems that you had are the result of the laws enacted by our dumkopfs in Sacramento.

I had the same general experience that you had when I ordered my two Ruger Single Sevens, but it is not the stores fault, though I am dismayed that you had so many paper work errors. That was the clerk's fault, and I don't think he (or they) would last at the Turner's in Fountain Valley, Signal Hill or Norwalk, where I have shopped. As far as the wait, I have never experienced any delay longer than 30 minutes to get my number called. I would have my watch checked if I were you. If the rest of your life is passing at the same rate as the wait times you mention, you'll be 90 before you know it.

However, with the best will in the world and with help the minute you walk in the door, you are looking at at least 45 minutes to process the paperwork and get it signed off for release. I budget an hour for a firearms pickup and am seldom wrong by 10 minutes. I have purchased many firearms from Turners going back to when they purchased Nationals in the late 80"s (I have 13 or 14 right now that I have bought there.) and have found them to be usually pretty good.

The problems are manifold.
The safety demonstration is mandatory by law. If a dealer sells a firearm without the firearms demonstration, he may be fined and or lose his license as well as be sued if something comes to light down the road.
If the paper work is not spot on, The Dealer may be fined and if multiple examples are found, may lose his license.
The second ID is also required in Virginia. It is not a second ID as much as it is a second proof of residence. Failure to secure it means The Dealer may be fined and if multiple examples are found, may lose his license.
The store requires at least two people to review the paperwork, to avoid the errors that you mentioned. Failure to get the second approval before releasing a firearm can result in termination.
The store requires the cashier to verify the receipt in the computer to prevent theft by unscrupulous would-be firearms purchasers. Modern computers make forging receipts and the like very easy.
All of this takes time and there is not much that can be done about.

I stopped going to Turners in West Covina when they were putting guns in their rack that they couldn't sell. Because they had had problems with stolen gun they had a 30 day hold on all used guns. At least this is what I was told. They would take my money for the gun but couldn't start paperwork until the end of their 30 day wait, provided the gun wasn't stolen. Didn't seem like a good deal nor a dealer that I wanted to deal with in the future. Have a dealer that is closer and can process paperwork faster.

Move to Texas! If the gun is in stock it takes less than an hour to examine the gun, fill out paper work, pay and out the door. Since I have my concealed carry there is no background check. If the gun is not in stock I order by phone, they call when it comes in, and I pick it up with the above lapse of time.

Or Georgia! Most days, if a gun is in stock and you have a GA Firearms License (CCW), the whole process will take 30 minutes or less. If the gun has to be ordered, just add ever how many days it takes for it to get to the shop.

Is there no decent LGS to give your money to?
Shop treatment of customer seems ridiculous even for kalifornia.

That is worse than New Jersey! Pulling a number?? Like in a bakery? Waiting for hours?

That sounds worse than here in NY. But is bet NYC is probably similar. Up here in western new York it isn't so bad.
Is that the only shop in town?

That's sad to read. I grew up in the orange groves of West Covina in the 1950's, when Chic's Sporting Goods and the West Covina Gun Shop were where you bought guns. Chic was also the High School football coach at Covina HS. Both stores are long gone, unfortunately.

Alexander's Reloading in La Puente was where you bought your reloading supplies and if you didn't have the gear, you could rent a space at his bench by the hour. Alexander was a real curmudgeon, but you could take a 3 pound coffee can in and he'd fill it with the powder of your choice for about $0.25 cents a pound. I haven't been back to that area in over 30 years and it sounds like I haven't missed anything....

I was in the second graduating class from the then new Charter Oak HS. I wonder if it's still there? The only thing I miss about that area is In-n-Out Burgers, but they just built a new one in Medford, OR,.......... That's about 3.5 hours away from me, but I've sampled it, just to make sure the quality is still there, and it is.

Thanks for all the understanding, no this isn't the only gun shop in town but Turner's outdoorsman is the only Lipsey dealer.

So it was deal with the he baloney or do without!

When you said "took a number and waited 2-4 hours." I suspected Turners.

We have one in Oxnard and I have seen this "take a number and wait" several times when guns sales were insane and especially on weekends. I walked out. I can usually find what I want for a lot less than Turners.

Don't you have a friend who's an FFL? I have 5 here in Ojai, maybe next time you should drive up here and I'll fix you up. all my guys can order from just about anyone and if you contact the source directly all you have to do is provide them with your FFL's name and License and CA DOJ Verification Letter (FAX it to them) and they will ship the gun directly to your guy. You then fill out the DROS wait 10 days and pick up the gun with only <5 minutes of paperwork signing on the back end.

You were dealing with morons! CA is bad but it isn't generally that bad. I can get any gun I want that is legal to own here from a True Value Hardware store, a Surplus Store or a Buddy who owns an Oil Field Machine Shop. If you belong to a club there should be soemone who at least has a contact that has an FFL.

Sorry, that you went at this in the Wrong Way. But I am sure you'll figure out a better way for next time.

By the way,,,, You'll love that gun!

I don't wait 2 hours at the DMV.
waiting that long to 'look at a gun' never mind just to talk about ordering one.
that would have me pretty bent out of shape.

I bought my Ruger Bisley 4 5/8 inch Flat Top 44 special last year in my shop in Lakewood Colorado. Filrd out form and background check took 10 Min. Paid for it and was out the door. So sorry to hear about your laws and regs. However, that Ruger is about the perfect sixgun for the price. You will love it.

When was the last time you walked into a gun shop where there was 100 people waiting to buy a gun? After Obama got Re-Elected (thanks Mitt!) Turners in Oxnard had lines of people that big nearly every day!

Just a sign of the times.
