Wuz in ("Was" for you folks that live north of here :-) ), Walmart today and naturally my buggy led me to the Sporting Goods. I have asked for at least the last 2 years about 22lr ammo and the answer has been no, until today.

I asked the nice Lady if they had anything marked down because of Father's Day and she just grinned. Then I asked about 22lr and she said yes. When my chin got up off my shirt I bought 3-100 count boxes of Rem golden boolits. I think she had 2 boxes left.

Happy Father's Day,

Leon

Good to hear you had some luck.
The only 22lr ammo I have been able to find is at outrageous inflated prices.
I can load my cast 158 gr bb boolit in 38spc for about the same cost haven't shot any 22lr in years.

Yep, going rate is about $0.10 to $0.15 per round at most stores.

Went to Rual King, a farm store, and there in the gun section was a huge box in front of the counter piled high with 50rd boxes of .22 for $5.25. Good price for my area. No limit.

wow you guy's are getting hosed.
333 packs are like 17-19 bucks depending on who made them.
500 packs of others are about 34.00
hmm now it sounds like we are all getting hosed, I'm not buying any so I'm getting hosed less.

Noticed some CCI Stingers for a little under seven bucks a box of fifty in Wal Mart this evening, but that was all they had. I passed.

I also acquired my first .25-20 recently. Will not buy over priced .22 LR unless absolutely necessary.

I am still sitting on several boxes of 525 count Rem golden boys that I bought for $7.99 on sale at BiMart!

Best regards

I bought some of the auto match 325 count boxes that PSA had on sale a few weeks ago.

Right or wrong, I've accepted the "new cost" of 22lr. I wasn't wise enough old enough to buy or rich enough to stock up 10-30 years ago.

Good to hear you found some! The Golden Bullet has been around here for the last month or so, goes quickly though. I scored a GB 1400rnd. bucket a few weeks ago for $74

Golden bullets... I'm sorry to hear that.
LGS near me has had piles of 22 every time I've visited this year. I usually stop by at least one or twice a month. This includes $4 a box cheap stuff, $21 Federal Auto Match for 325 rnds, or $40 for various bulk packs. I don't even look most of the time I'm in Walmart. They've had nothing in stock that I've seen in over a year.

When you shoot those Remington Golden Bullets, be sure to wear eye protection. I have had 3 ruptured cases from golden bullets in two different bricks in the past year. Two different rifles that were new and no other problems in those rifles with other brands of bullets. blew out the rim section due to high pressure. Needless to say, I will pass on Golden bullets in the future.

Our local wally world hasn't had any 22 in stock over the last few years. Guess the gremlins are still stocking up. Last gun show the federal 525 packs were going for $50 and the auto match 350 pack was $35 each. I haven't fired a 22 in years as I refuse to buy at these prices. Frank

I was waiting for the Remington/ Golden Bullet bash hahaha. I'll say about a decade ago they fed great and were quite accurate out of my 10/22. Are they really that bad now? Show me some proof.

I have shot about a half of a 1400 round bucket of Remington Golden Bullets in the past several months. No problems in my Mossberg 702. But I would bet that thing would handle anything. Just another note. I have some old Remington Vipers. Shot some of them too. They are about 4 times dirtier than the new Golden Bullets.
I bought the 1400 round bucket just before Christmas of 15 at Dunham Sports in Wisconsin for $79.99 I doubt if I will ever pay more than that.

That's what I like to hear. I know Remington isn't premium ammo but it works for me. Last misfire I've had has been with American eagle in their cheap fake ****50 round box 500 round brick*** BS!! actually 10x 40round boxes 400 brick.

There is one place not far from me is selling 22lr for $40 for 525 . It dose not matter what the make is. So if I really need them I would get them form there. they are the only place I seen with that large brick for some time.

Show me proof they're good.

I only have my own experience. I shot one brick marked "new and improved" in my 617. Report and recoil were very noticeably different from shot to shot. Accuracy was poor. 3-5% failed to fire, even after being turned to let the firing pin strike a different portion of the rim. They left some strange hard fouling on the muzzle that needed a brass brush to remove. And finally, I had a rim blow out and pepper my finger with brass bits and powder.

Others have reported complete satisfaction. Good for them. It will be a desperate day before I buy another box.

Ive got a few buckets of the new stuff, I'll take a 22 with me the next range trip and see how they fare. my wifes beretta neos seems to feed just about anything I give it though.

Due to the shortage and prices, you may get people gathering in disbelief that your shooting a 22.

Reming golden bullets are second only to CCI standard velocity. I have fired a large bucket ( 1400 rounds I think) over the past year. They consistently produce 1/4 to 3/8 inch 10 shot groups at 25 yards from my Browning Buck Mark. Never a failure of any kind. I will buy then every time I can find them priced sensibily.

lmao, well my project gun will be finished shortly and I need to function test it. never shot a marlin 60 before, but it handles nicely and was a gift from my grandpa. I think with the deals I've gotten on primers 38 spec has been cheaper and easier to acquire vs 22lr but I've got enough to keep my guns fed.

Our local walmart has had Rem and Winchester 100rd for $7.89 boxes and 50rd CCI Standard for $4.49? for a while now. I've bought a couple each of the 100rd boxes over the last few weeks.

I went to an Atwoods the other day, they had all kinds. 50rds Fiocchi or CCI ($4.29?) 50rd Browning($6.99) 100rds Rem and Winchesters($9.79?), 325rds Fed Match ($24.99) 400rd Browning ($29.99) and ArmsCorp 500rd($47.99). All with No Limit

I got a box of 400rd Browning for my dad and one for myself. Kinda high, but I've been wanting to try the Browning stuff.

I envy you guys that can shoot your 38 cheaper than a 22LR.
Even at 2 cents a round for primers and 1 cent for powder I can't
find lead boolits delivered to my door for less than 8 cents per round.
But I can get 22 LR for 6 cents a round at my LGS just 8 miles
away and on my way to my R&P club!

I have shot about half of the 500 Rem Golden 22LR, that I just bought from LGS for $37. No feeding issues and no misfires out of my 10/22 Ruger. Shot maybe 50 out of the Marlin 60 also. Must have gotten ones that were made on a Monday, as I didn't have any problems and would buy them again.

my estimation, primer .02 powder .01 and lead for bullet @ .02 (lead priced at retail $1 per lb). Brass I reuse so i don't factor that in, .05c per 38 wadcutter for me.

I don't count the cost of lead, since I pick bullet scrap out of the berm and have about 600 pounds waiting to be melted down and recycled. So, actual cost of any pistol rounds from .38 Sp. to .45 (long) Colt is 3 to 5 cents per round.

Of course that's not counting time, which is completely subjective. A few boxes here and there is no big deal and I enjoy it, but I find I have less and less spare time any more. If I factored in any value for time at all I'd be buying high priced .22 ammo and calling it a bargain. Personally I've been on the edge of putting my casting and loading stuff in storage for a while because my priorities in life have been changing, but that's another topic.

I bought primers from a store going out of business a few years ago, I got every primer he had in stock over a doz. sleeves of 5,000 each. Paid less than $40 a sleeve.

Comes out to approx .007 cents each.

If we count magical free lead let me add in that I'm shooting 22 LR I got from the CMP for 75 cents a box in the early 2000nds.
Lets level the playing field and make it replacement cost of the ammo and no once in a life time deals.

Gus

My once in a lifetime deal will last longer than my lifetime.

As far as .22 rimfire, I have approx 30 to 40 thousand rounds I purchased before Obama was ever heard of. My std .22 ammo cost in the neighborhood of $6.00 a brick, the Match ammo cost anywhere from $70 dollars a brick to $160 bucks a brick. The price for match ammo still is in the same ball park.

The only reason I have so much is I bought on sales from dealers & chain stores. It to will likely out last me.

Granted todays prices are more, but raw materials have gone up in price as well as labor.

Price a new car lately??????????

I now shoot PCP air rifles with pellets alone costing as much as my .22 rimfire from long ago. And I'm not even factoring in the cost of charging the air rifle.

Magical free lead???????????????

Not a big deal, range lead is usually free, at least here in No. Indiana, I have a few thousand pounds already smelted into ingots, wheel weights also are free to me from the tire store I deal with, they are 2 blocks away from my front door in the small town I live in.

I used to shoot Golden bullets in my Remington 581 left hand bolt action for many years and they were very accurate. Not so anymore. I switched over to CCI Mini-Mag hollowpoints and they shoot less than an inch at 50 yards with some groups less then 1/2".
I bought some of the plain lead bullet Remingtons several years ago and they are terrible for accuracy, but still better than the Armscorp I shot.
Been shooting my Remington #4 rolling block mostly with match ammo that shoots very well.

Must be different from batch to batch but my experience with them has been exactly the same as yours! I have shot them in my 10/22, Colt New Frontier and my Anschultz all with the same dismal results, what you said about the difference in sound between shots is dead on and has been my biggest gripe. Those guys who like them have been lucky so far and it's very likely they too will eventually run into these problems when they buy from a different batch, at today's prices I won't risk buying the sorry stuff hoping for a good batch. You guys who like these things are in luck if you follow me in line because I will gladly leave that stuff on the shelf for you!

Erm, I included purchasing lead at $1 per lb for my estimate. I don't see any magical free lead either.

If I add in the cost of buying once-fired brass (avg 4c in bulk) I'm around 9c a round. Still cheaper than the alternative I used to buy @ freedom muntions $150 per 500 @ .30c each

Probably talking about my magical free lead, though I don't think there's anything magical about it. I do certainly understand that not everyone has access to free lead, especially nowadays.

I have an acquaintance with whom I was talking about reloading a while back. I think I talked him out of it. I told him that he could not afford to reload, let alone cast. He's a busy guy who makes a lot of money. He had recently been saying that he often turns down high paying work to spend time with his family. His questions about reloading and casting were solely in regards to how much he could save, and I told him he'd probably be better off buying factory ammo because reloading wouldn't be worth his time.

Honestly it probably wouldn't be worth my time if I didn't enjoy it and already have the gear.

See? We're not all on a level playing field any which way. Some of us have access to free lead, whereas others have access to free time. :)
