I've been wanting one of these for over a decade, and finally decided to "bite the bullet" and buy one. I'm up in Anchorage right now on business, and I just found over a dozen Boyd's walnut stocks for it for $64. SCORE! I get my pick of the litter as far as the wood goes. Is this week gonna get any better?

I've shot one in competition a lot, but always with jacketed bullets. Mine is 1970 vintage, and has always liked lighter loads. The only difficulty I've ever had with it is with carbon fouling in the gas cylinder and piston.

I too have wanted one for at least 10-15 years. I ordered an M1A last week and it's supposed to come in tomorrow or thursday. I'm like a little kid the week before christmas. (Mine's walnut, with carbon barrel)

Have a good one,
Dave

They are nice! I got mine a long time ago, back in 1984.

I hope you have as much fun with yours as I have with mine. It did double duty for awhile as black bear medicine with a 20-round clip loaded with 165-grain soft points.

I'm going to continue to pine over 1 for another few years; but mark my words I will own one!

:twisted:Since purchasing mine around 01 I have come to the conclusion that it will NEVER leave my rack. Everyone should have one issued to them by the gov't (imagine THAT!) so the people that can't afford one won't be deprived. Like it? I guess just a little...........

On the "CB Loads/Military Rifles" forum, there's a stickied thread titled "7.62x51 NATO (.308 WCF) in the Springfield M1A".

Reading it should give considerable insight into some starting points for cast-bullet loading in the M1A.

MANY powders and bullets are tested and some surprising results obtained in about 3,000 rounds fired on that thread.

if you guys like the m-14 family....you should try an ar-10 from armalite.....

i built a full on m1a...and sold it befor firing a single shot( yes i had shot the donor m1a), and bought an ar-10(t).

both are great rifles, but the bedding on an m-14 will have to be redone, it has a narrow range of useable powders, and lots of moving parts.
the ar-15/ar-10 family is user friendly. tuneable, multiple chamberings available . no where near the maintenance.

yes it aint wood...but if that is the only complaint...you can buy wood furniture for them!

(my m1a was about a 1 plus moa rifle, my ar10(t) is a sub .5 moa rifle....and the custom built single shot ar10 is sub .25 moa......small group is a 0.116!)

I hear ya on the accuracy thing . . . but an AR10 doesn't have a soul. :)

It's like comparing a glock to a 1911 . .both are great . . . .but . . . :)

I've read your write-up several times. Each time is an enjoyable experience. I'm looking to shoot the 190-205 grain pills in her. I figure if I am limited to a velocity barrier, I might as well get all the boolit weight I can out of her. Lots of good boolits available in that weight range.
