So in my grandfathers large stash of items we keep finding little treasures. Among them was this curious set of handles. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160612/3d395acf47337b09b31520c9759c016d.jpg

I'm hoping those on here more learned than my father and I in these things might help us identify them. They look like small handles to a mold handle but no such handle was found yet around the house/shop.

Replacement handles for the Lyman/Ideal No.45 Lubricator and Sizer, and a number of other older Lyman/Ideal tools. The style of the handles indicates they would date, roughly, from about 1939 to about 1968.

I don't think file handles, files seldom have pinned handles.

Thanks JrMartin1964. Pulled up some images of Lyman no 45s and the handles match. Grandpa did have a no 45 (sold it some time ago sadly) so that seems to fit. Not sure why he would have two spares lying around but I'll have to see if there are any other old Lyman tools they may have been to.

If the holes are threaded, they're for numerous hand tools Lyman made. Mine will accept bore brushes, primer pocket cleaners, primer pocket crimp removers, etc.

Hope this helps.

They used that style handle for a very long time, on a very large variety of tools. If the ones you found haven't been fitted to a specific tool, they are replacements and could be used to replace whatever handles are missing, broken, or just worn out. Incidentally, they came in at least two sizes and perhaps three or more, depending on application. BTW, about the only thing I haven't seen that style handle used for is mould handles.

FWIW, I had to epoxy a small handle like those onto the "wrench" of my 1st Model Lubri-sizer as it had gotten wallowed out over the years and kept falling off. It had a couple of hairline cracks, but the epoxy should have taken care of that as well. 8-)

I concur with the assessment that they are handles for Lyman 45

File handles...a better choice is to drill a 5/16" X 1" hole in a golf ball...much more comfortable.

5/16 X 1" ??? That won't fit any file tang that I have.
Did ya possibly mean 5/32 X 1"?

Yes, the small tang ones but I was thinking of a very large rasp I first did it to. I should have said "drill a hole large enough and deep enough as to drive the golf ball onto the tang and it will stay there.''

how's that...charlie

Ideal/Lyman Multi Handle Wood replacement part.
Used for handle replacement of all Handles other than mould handles. Those look to be of the old Ideal make. Lyman used a different Wood, lighter in color. Probably Hard Maple.

They sure look like the handles for the Lyman 45 sizer/luber, or the Lyman Ingot mould handle

possibly draw knife handles.

You think someone replaced the handles on my old Ideal greaser and Lyman trimmers with draw file handles?
