Not much of a hand cannon shooter but figured I need to be able to at least hit the broadside of a barn with one so pulled out the Ruger Blackhawk chambered in 45 Colt.
Had previously shot lead out of the gun using Titegroup but did not like the small charges in large cases. The boolit of choice is the 270gr SAA. Did some research and came up with information regarding Alliant Green & Red Dot. Tried 6.0gr of Green Dot and 5.5gr of Red Dot at 20 paces using a standard paper plate as the target. Aiming at the center of the plate the Red Dot load was off the plate on the high side. The Green Dot load was upper right but in the plate and a nice grouping.
My plan is to reshoot these loads using an orange sticker on butcher paper so I can see the grouping of the Red Dot load. Both loads we fairly mild in my mind but the Red Dot left the cases sooty.
Anybody else using these powders in the 45 Colt with the 270gr SAA?
