Not much of a hand cannon shooter but figured I need to be able to at least hit the broadside of a barn with one so pulled out the Ruger Blackhawk chambered in 45 Colt.
Had previously shot lead out of the gun using Titegroup but did not like the small charges in large cases. The boolit of choice is the 270gr SAA. Did some research and came up with information regarding Alliant Green & Red Dot. Tried 6.0gr of Green Dot and 5.5gr of Red Dot at 20 paces using a standard paper plate as the target. Aiming at the center of the plate the Red Dot load was off the plate on the high side. The Green Dot load was upper right but in the plate and a nice grouping.
My plan is to reshoot these loads using an orange sticker on butcher paper so I can see the grouping of the Red Dot load. Both loads we fairly mild in my mind but the Red Dot left the cases sooty.
Anybody else using these powders in the 45 Colt with the 270gr SAA?

I use Red Dot/Promo 6.0 gr. under the Lyman 452424 (250 gr SWC) in my Ruger BH 45 LC. If I'm steady they'll make one ragged hole every time. Agree there is some soot. Also like Unique 7.5 gr with this boolit very much.

That's impressive! My handgun technique needs serious work.

I’ve tried Green Dot and Red Dot with my Blackhawk 45 Colt using the RCBS 45-270-SAA with results that showed only fair accuracy…

Green Dot: 6.5 & 7.0 774 fps & 825 fps
Red Dot: 5.5 & 6.5 753 fps & 846 fps

I found the ‘ol standby powder, Unique, produced some very good accuracy using 9.0 grains for 974 fps…

For much heavier loads, H-110 and 2400 were the best. But, my heavy-duty loads are pretty much of days gone by. I simply do not enjoy shooting them anymore…

Good-luck…BCB

Thanks for the velocities BCB. Once I shoot my loads on butcher paper I will decide between the two. I plan to use this for my carry load should I stumble across some bacon on the hoof on the way to my deer stand again.
