All, I have read several posts over the years about the Uberti 1885 Highwall copy . I just received one 169685that I ordered 18 months ago. I have fired it with the factory buck horn and blade sight and It groups really well out to 100 yards. I ordered some Unertl sight blocks from Steve Earle Products and will have the barrel drilled and tapped for the 6-48 screws as soon as they get here . There are some downsides... The "set trigger" works only one way; set the trigger and pull the front. No front trigger engagement without the set which means you have to dry fire the rifle to get the hammer down. I have heard it said that these "eye tie" barrels mic big but I slugged this one and it came out .3082 across the groves using a very good Starrett micrometer. I have 56 year old eyes so I won't know the rifle's full potential until I get the scope attached. I have about a dozen .30 molds to try. If you have a favorite 30-40 Krag cast boolit load please share. I have had good luck with the RCBS.30-180-FN, an VERY old Lyman 308291 and a Hoch 310-205 Nose pour mold. So far I haven't found a better powder than IMR 4198 in the 22 to 25 grain weight range but as I said I am open to suggestions. I will keep you all posted.

That is one of the neatest rifles i have seen in quite some time! My best friend and I were just talking about how bad we both want a ruger no1 in 30-40. I am very envious. I could look past the trigger on that one. Congratulations. You'll have to post what she likes to eat with group results.

That's a beautiful rifle for a great cartridge. I am envious and wish you tight groups and wild game meat! IMR 4198 is my favorite CB powder in my .30-30 and .300 Savage so I'm no help...Best,Thomas.

Sounds like you're on the road to happiness with that rig. I too am envious. Please keep us posted.

As for powders in the Krag, I have had good luck over the years with 2400, RL-7, and SR-4759 with 180-200 grain cast bullets for mid-range target loads. 4759 remains my all time favorite, but that's a moot point now as you know. I have substituted 220 grain 311284's (out of an old single cavity Ideal mold) for the 220 grain jacketed RN's over 40 grains 4350- ballyhoo'ed as equivalent to the old Arsenal loads- for hunting. I wouldn't step farther than that in a Krag rifle but you might be able to shade that a bit in that modern HiWall- up to you if you do, personally that's enough for me. It's a stout load.

Very nice. I've just barely started down the 30 US highway so I'm no help. Sure interested in your progress tho, please keep us posted.

Wow! What a beautiful rifle! That year and a half would have passed anyway, but now you have something really beautiful to show for it. I especially like the trigger guard treatment. Ya' done good, sir, and I have a feeling you'll soon have it shooting lights out, too!

I have had two and currently still have the 45-70 the 38-55 went to a friend. They have accounted for deer and coyote and have proven accurate to 300 yards. I shoot only B/P and I have shot groups under 2" at 100 yards with the tang sight. Mine is an early one and it has some really nice wood. You have a keeper there. I always wanted to try one in 30-40 but never got a chance. I will be interested in your groups once the scope is on.
